Will a Maxtrac 800 B1 do conventional?

Post by n7maq »

Hello, we have a bunch of Maxtrac 800 D45MQA5GB1AK units that Nextel sent us for a re-banded customer. I was under the impression that a B1 would not do conventional at all. I have been unable in the RSS to assign a conventional mode. I did try, and was able to read it with conventional RSS, but when I hit F4, no modes showed up. In the Maxtrac Trunking RSS, I had no luck also. They claim they will do it, and I don’t think so. The firmware in the radio is HLN9260C. If I can do it, can someone PLEASE explain how to get it done.

Thanks,

Jim.

I checked my MaxTrac manual. That model number comes up as a MaxTrac 820, 30w, and it has 1/1 after the entry. I believe this means one system, one talk-group, even though it is a 2ch radio according to the front panel. It's a trunking only radio that may or may not have talk-around. If one of the buttons or LEDs on the front say CALL, I think I had one like that. Strange beast.

Other radios are 2/2, 8/8, and some even have CONV after the model entry.

The firmware you mentioned IS what's supplied with the radio.

If you only need conventional, the easiest thing to do would be to replace the firmware, then blank and initialize the board. It would need to have a different model number to indicate 2ch conventional, but it's definitely possible. I've done it to several 2ch 30w 800 MHz radios so far that were converted for amateur receiver use.

Thanks for the conformation. I will not be converting theses units to conventional, Nextel will send us the correct units.

Yes, Nextel is sending out Maxtracs, this is for a customer that has an 800 MHz conventional system (a small farm with 25 units). They are replacing Micors. Nextel also sent a high stability oscillator, and RX channel element for the freq change to the Micor repeater. All of the micor mobiles are getting pulled, and sent back to Nextel.

Thanks,

Jim.
