I got to thinking... yes I know, I apologize for all the black smoke.
I'm just starting to learn about more of the Moto infrastructure components, so please pardon if this question is somewhat noobyish, but is it possible and/or worth it to try and take, say, a VHF Quantar and by swapping modules, reprogramming, and if necessary retuning, to make it a UHF Quantar? Will the software allow it? Or is the answer more likely to be just wait until one becomes available here or on fleabay?

The Quantar platform is very versatile. The RSS will pretty much let you do what you want. The station control board is not band specific. You could mix and match parts as desired, for example pull the receiver out of a VHF station, insert a UHF receiver, and program it as a cross-band station.
Obviously, to convert a VHF station to UHF you would need the receiver, exciter, and PA modules. If finding those modules [and a VHF station to convert ]is cheaper and easier than finding a UHF station - go for it.

You can build a station 'from scratch' with the RSS.
The RSS comes with a starter file called "TRAINING.CP"
You can load that, then go to the station configuration screen to set the ranges of the transmitter and receiver. Then you can validate your work by having the RSS read the station to see that what you have created is compatible with the hardware.
If only the mobile & portable programs were that easy.....
