Spectras+Encryption?

Post by poser »

Are all Spectras securenet capable? If so, do you load a key into it with a KVL and cable, just like the sabers?
Thanks

Not all Spectras are secure capable. The firmware and radio options have to support encryption in order to install a module and have it work. The Astro Spectras will support encryption by default but they need the module to operate.

Keyloading works the same way as the sabers. You get the keyloading cable for the Spectra, plug it in and away you go.

What radios do you own?: X9000 thru APX

Post by Pj »

Never seen a spectra that wouldn't work with the module plugged in. Perhaps some really old MLM verisons may have a problem, but I had a 2.x spectra that I threw DVP-XL in without a problem. Some of the advanced features such as DVP/DES in the same radio may have been supported in later MLM's, but single key/single format worked (at least for me).

Like the X9000's, the X in the model number desinated that it was ordered from the factory with an encyption option. Internally the boards where the same. In my last place, we recieved 5 suplus radios that where typical KMA models, added the DVP-XL boards, reprogrammed as secure, life was good.

However, I haven't seen any secure 900 spectra's, but most spectra's used on 900 didn't require encyption.

That chart does not show what W means. Thanks! So most spectras will work with encryption?

Another excellent radio page is Mike B's Spectra page:

You'll need a hybrid carrier, a DES or DES-XL hybrid, a 3011-CX or 3011-DX KVL and a KVL<->MX cable.

For a remote-mount Spectra, make sure you have the proper remote kit that has a keyload port on it. The MX end of the KVL<->MX cable plugs into that for keyloading. (If memory serves me right)

For a dash-mount Spectra, you'll need the MX<->Spectra Mic adapter as well.

So the "W" aka conventional radio will take the carrier? (BTW: what does it look like and what does it do?)
I'm guessing it's a drop in to convert?

No it will not, you need a GXA radio and it must have the keyloader port on the interconnect board in order to load the key.

Yes, it WILL take the carrier.

Yes it will take the carrier but unless he gets the proper front interconnect he won't be able to load a key and he will need to bit bang it to get it to show the securenet as being available.

I've keyloaded via the mic port on remote-mount spectras that didn't have the keyload port. I forget what I had to do to the radio to allow that and I've since sold that radio but, hey... This is Batlabs man. Forget what the radio is SUPPOSED to be able to do. Lets talk about what it WILL do if properly motivated to do so. ;)
