Spectra v6.00.05 to run on 700mhz wind. ME laptop...

Post by kd6rfs »

okay...I have a Compaq, 700Mhz, WindowsMe Laptop.....will the v6.00.05 run on it....it wont run right on this desktop 2.6ghz windowsXp emachines ......when I double click the spectra.exe file....all I get is a blank black window with a flashing cursor.......or when i click on spectra2.exe, all I get is the same window and it says "pass_where" with a flashing cursor.....I extracted all the files originally and did not modify them at all, just extracted the compressed zip file for the RSS......if I copy to a floppy should I copy the compressed (original) or the extracted files....and then should I insert the diesk to my Compaq 700mhz, windowsMe laptop and copy it to there....will it work or will I have the same problem? is there something I am doing wrong? thanks...I just am not familiar with running dos programs, or installing and getting RSS to work....I can program almost any radio....but usually when i did it in the past, I started from the main RSS window..."read" the radio...entered the codeplug, and then "f8" write to the radio and thats it....why does motorola have to be so darn difficult in everything they do!!! thanks again, David kd6rfs

Heh....you may want to find something different than ME. That is by far the most unstable, terrible, rotten OS MicroSoft ever made. I would load 95/or 98SE if you can find it. They have proven to be a more stable platform. Also, I know that ME does NOT have the optioin to boot in DOS, however, 95/98 do carry this option, I believe. (95 does for sure) It may be because you are using a DOS window and not real DOS. I have had this problem before.

What radios do you own?: Motorola, Icom, Sunair (HF).

Spectra RSS does not like high-speed systems, nor should it be run under Windows (especially WinME -- that thing was easily one of the worst jokes that the Redmond Empire ever had the audacity to foist on the public).

Get yourself a cheapie slow system to run DOS-based RSS. Use real MS-DOS, not a DOS window. You should be able to find plenty of good candidates at used computer places or on greed-bay.

Trying to read a Spectra with a mismatched system like that is bad enough, but trying to write to one with the environment you describe is just begging for it to be turned into a brick.

Happy hunting.

Motorola's not being difficult, you just aren't making the proper choices for programming computers. They are DOS programs, and as such require either real DOS, or Windows 95/98 which can boot into DOS mode. Windows ME nor Windows XP do not have a DOS mode to boot into, so it won't work for you. I know you had said your JT1000 RSS works about 70% of the time through a command prompt under WinME, but that's 30% of the time something can go wrong. I'd recommend reformatting & installing Win98SE instead of WinME, if only for the DOS mode.

As far as installing the Spectra RSS, you can simply copy the folder "as is" from your XP machine onto a USB stick (if you have one) and transfer it in it's entirety to the ME machine. If you don't have a USB stick, you can transfer the files over on 2 or 3 floppies, or zip the folder & it should be small enough to fit onto a single floppy.

Ideally, if you have the original installation floppies, you can just install it from those.
