Ok - this is sooooooo frustrating
1) Bought a practically new XTS3000
2) Have a codeplug with Version 12
3) Have the Moto CPS R01.03.00
4) Attempting to read the radio, program says software is too new for this version.
My questions are simple: What version of the XTS3000 CPS is the latest? What version will program my radio? Would there ever be an advantage of getting software which was "just good enough" to program my radio as opposed to getting the most up-to-date? I've been told the XTS3500 software will also program the XTS3000 and I have RSS R02.00.03 (which I can't get to run on ANY computer...see my other posts) and I wonder if this software will program this radio.
There's no reason why this should be so complicated or prohibitively difficult. I know I should be up to date with this stuff but it's getting harder and harder to justify why /\/\ makes it so foolishly difficult to program these radios.
Thanks, everyone for all your help. And just think....these are just the questions I have and have NEVER been able to program the radio. I can imagine how lost I'll be once I actually try PROGRAMMING the damn thing.

Your CPS is ancient. It's one thing to fall a little behind, but quite another to use a version which will only program a very small percentage of any radio you might happen to pick-up.
As to your other question, there generally isn't a huge advantage "feature wise" between getting something that's "just good enough" to program as opposed to the "latest & greatest". Most times, new features require the target radio to have the latest & greatest firmware in them too. The main reason to have the latest CPS is for compatibility's sake...not to mention the later versions are supported under more Operating Systems than the earlier versions. Also, sometimes new radio models are added, for example the Astro25 Portable CPS was once just for the XTS5000...it now handles XTS2500/MT1500/XTS1500/PR1500/SSE5000...and probably some others I'm forgetting.
Oh, and the XTS3500 RSS won't program the XTS3000, period.
