Railway locomotive CleanCab mounting bracket

Post by RF_Burns »

Hi
Does anyone know of a mounting bracket designed to fit into a CleanCab mounting bracket that would let you install a regular mobile radio into it.

At $5,000 bucks for a cleancab radio, most shortlines refuse to pay that and just use a mobile and power supply. If there was a bracket out there that would adapt a mobile into the standard locomotive housing that would be bonus.

Even more bonus if it had the power supply built in.

Anyone seen such a beast?

Look for a junk RR Spectra with a working power supply. The bottom part of the case fits the CleanCab mount and contains the power supply and power connector. Then, all you need to do is mount a small mobile on top and plug it in to the 12V output of the power supply.

I bet the big RR Companies do have some great shops, but I deal with shortlines, only a very few Engines that seem to get switched to other shortlines on a regular basis.

Just hoping there was a solution already out there. Been scanning the 'Net and not finding anything.

Last time I was at Illinois Rail Museum it was MaxTrac 300 with mag mount antennas. The maxtracs were mounted on the control stand to the left of the horn and above the trainline brake.

The short line I worked for would not have cared what it looked like just throw it in there.
We had all clean cab specs but most of them didnt have the nice box for them, just the mounting plate broken lock on radio and wire holding them down.
I remember one of the units haveing a 72 to 12volt supply in the electrical cabinet. Not sure what it was for.
It was an old IC GP10 and it was mounted over by the transition controlls.
Have no idea who made it though
If you buy used parts try checking with your supplyer maby they can help

Do you mean the cleancab tray or the box that sits on the control stand? BTW, Newmar makes a DC-DC convertor 72 VDC in (model 72-12-18IC) and so does powerstream.

It was the clean cab tray.
Newmar was the manufacturer of the converter but I have no idea what the IC was doing with it.

Hi
These locomotives have the mounting tray (box) for the CleanCab radios. What i was hoping to find was a ready made bracket that would fit the CleanCab mount. This bracket would hold a regular mobile (GM300, maxtrac, CDM whatever) and hopefully hold the voltage convertor too.

The locomotives don't seem to spend much time before they are sent off to another location, so alot of time is spend removing and installing. Would be nice to just slip it into the existing CleanCab bracket.

If this is a one piece spectra, I have seen common faceplate/console mounting plates used that did fit the opening...I think a Havis faceplate was used with a little modification. Other than that, its all a custom job.

GE makes an adapter tray (12MT-1) for their 12R Series II AAR radios. It fits the AAR mounting & looks to have enbough room for a low power Spectra & PS. It might do what you want.

I think the GE bracket is designed to fit the old 2pc radios where the transciever was mounted elsewhere from the control console

Looks like I'll have to get my metal working skills going here.

Thanks guys

Central Oregon & Pacific Railroad here. As for an adapter that you can put a mobile in, then slide it into the AAR Spectra box, no. I can't help with that. Just on a side note, we went to Kenwoody mobiles with external speakers. This sucks because the damn mics stick, cords are already fraying, connector snaps out when the engineers yank on the mic. UP police kept wanting their radios back, and the oddball ones we had from fallen flags/smaller road, CNW, NYS&W, WISC. CENT., etc. kept failing.

They took all the Spectra boxes off the top of the airbrake stand and mounted the mobiles directly to the top of the stand. I wish they had just mounted them inside the box, because the boxes had wire baskets that we could put water bottles, extra fusees, toilet paper, etc. in but now that crap just rolls around on the floor. They rewired the radio breaker to come off one cell, 12 volts. Never drains it though, since you pull the battery knife when you shut the engine down anyway.

Really, really makes you appreciate the AAR Spectra/Astro. I don't think they make a beefier mic or thicker cord.

we've mounted the M216/GM300 radios in the CleanCab radio box along with the 72-12v convertor and a cig. lighter socket to run a cell phone off. Its just a pain in the butt everytime Power gets swapped out by head office.

The radios have never failed once, some are over 15 years old now, DTMF mics last a few years before they break. Power supplies are another matter though, although the ones we are using now have lots of filtering and seem to survive.

Running the radio across one battery is very bad news.

I'd just like to find something the fits the CleanCab radio bracket that will hold the radio and voltage convertor in one package. Unfortunately i'm an electronics guy not a millwright. Although I hear pay is better in that field!
