New style USB flashport device

Post by RFguy »

I was ordering some flashport upgrades for XTS5000 and was asked if I wanted the new "USB" flash device. Not wanting to be a test subject I chickened out and said no.

Anyone else see or use these?

this is why they asked... but then again, if you are using 5000's.... looks like it doesn't apply.

Service & Repair Notes (SRN) SRN: 1523A
Bulletin APC: 326, 310, 374, 412, 432, 465,
Technical Information 494, 466, 527, 620, 623, 722, 761
Networks and Enterprise Business DATE: March 2006

Revised April 06 to modify the symptom

SUBJECT: Flash Upgrades of MCS/MTS and ASTRO Subscriber radios using NEW CPS - FLASH Errors

MODELS AFFECTED:
MCS2000 / MTS2000, XTS3000, XTS3500, ASTRO Saber, and ASTRO Spectra

Enhanced FLASHport keys are required for FLASHport upgrades or FLASHport refresh using ASTRO Saber & XTS 3000 CPS R05.00.02 or greater and ASTRO Spectra CPS R05.00.02 and greater
Enhanced FLASHport keys are required for FLASHport upgrades or FLASHport refresh using MCS2000 / MTS2000 radios CPS R02.00.01 or greater Enhanced FLASHkey Example:

SYMPTOM:
If you received a FLASHport refresh or upgrade that was issued when a previous version of the CPS was current (Version R01.13.00 and earlier for MTS/MCS, and Version R04.01.04 and earlier for Astro Saber/ XTS3000/Astro Spectra), and you changed over to the version of CPS that supports Rebanding before completing the FLASHport upgrade, you will experience an incompatibility between the new CPS and the old style FLASHkey. Symptoms of this failure are as follows: "Unwrapping the FLASHkey failed! - Verify that a FLASHkey is connected or the correct FLASHkey is connected."

CAUSE:
If one of the newer versions of CPS is used with the old style FLASHkey, a failure will occur.

RESOLUTION:
There are 2 possible solutions for this issue:
1) If the radios have not been programmed with the latest CPS, the standard FLASHport upgrades will work with earlier CPS versions on these radios.
2) If radios have already been programmed with the latest CPS, the codeplug version has been updated and your current FLASHkey will not work with these radios. In this instance, contact the System Support Center – TSO Team at 800-927-2744 and request an Enhanced FLASHport key. Be prepared to send your FLASHkeys for exchange!
Note: Enhanced FLASHkeys get connected directly to the parallel port of the computer, NOT to the SRIB.

All of the Astro25 product [e.g. XTS5000, XTL5000, et.] flash upgrades use the same ibutton technology that is used for the new advanced system keys.

The ibutton has to be placed in an ibutton reader for use with your computer. Initially M shipped parallel port readers. We have used the parallel port ones but have not tried the USB version, so I can't say how well those work.

When you get your flash kit it comes with a button installed in a reader[covered with a lable]. After you use up the flashes, M may ask you to send it back. The reader is still perfectly good plus they may be able to reprogram the ibutton for the next guy.

The SRN refers to the fact that they are not using the old style flash key anymore for the legacy Astro products - all flash kits now use the ibutton - either parallel or USB.
