Wierd Motorola JEDI mic
Hello. Upon picking up a UHF MTS2000 3 from Dayton, it came with this NMN6194A Speaker-Mic. Looks Just Like the regular coil-cord Jedi Mic, but has 3 side buttons and an antenna on top (Stubby UHF). I didn't think motorola made these any more, but I could swear this mic is new. Not a scratch anywhere and even the plastic over the M logo. The PTT Button is also a rubber cover instead of the plastic paddle.
...anyways, was there ever any problems with this mic on UHF? I thought there was on 800/900 because of the short coil, but other than that, is it an OK mic to use on UHF?
Thanks,
Ray.

aren't those for the xts's or do the buttons actually work with a mts? and don't they make a display mic and one with a volume control or channel selector on it too?

Yes, the antenna is detachable; it uses the exact same connector found on the XTS/HT1000/MT/MTS/Visar radios for the antenna.
It looks exactly like this:

Only in the upper right-hand corner on the top of the mic there is the antenna, and on the right side of the mic, on the side, there are 3 buttons. The top 2 depress, and the 3rd one seems as though it does not do anything. Also, there is just a short length of coil on the cord, with more of the cord being straight.

Looks like this?

See this thread:

And as escomm mentioned earlier, I think they were discontinued due to poor performance.

It is amazing that those things keep showing up. They weren't just discontinued - they were RECALLED way back in October 1993.
The bulletin said:
"You should STOP USING the NMN6194 model speaker microphone units. Return all of these speaker/microphone units to Motorola."
Motorola paid the return shipping and sent you a free new replacement NMN6228A for each returned unit.

Man I wish they still did that offer. It would be used on my MTS2000, but I'm still trying to obtain the CPS for it, so I can't really preform a test.
I had thought that they still made them due to the fact that it looks brand new, plastic film still over the (M) logo, not a scratch anywhere. Must be NOS then.

I had one, it sucked on 800/900MHz, but worked fine on my UHF Jedis. Kinda neat looking more modern than the square bodied PS mike head they've had since the days of the Genesis radios and STX's. The only thing is the button volume hi/lo is easy to accidentally depress when operating the PTT. Other than that, I thought it was a cool mike.
The rubber PTT is known to get very stiff and hard to actuate.
IIRC, they still make a "Euro" version of this mike with a straight (as opposed to coiled) cord for the Euro Jedis. The London Metropolitan Police used them before they switched to Tetra (they had UHF Smartnet/Smartzone IIRC).

Works OK until the coax in the coil cord breaks. Then the RF has to jump out at the radio end. If you could see RF, the whole thing would be glowing red hot!
Since it's on your belt at the time AND in proximity to your ... [well you know what it's close to] ... but what the heck - as long as you aren't planning on a having a family anyway...
You didn't think Motorola would spend all that money to recall them just because they might not work?? Ha! If that were the case they would have recalled every Mostar and Traxar they ever built!
