SPECTRA FAIL 001 (NOT OUT OF BANDSPLIT!)

ok, did the searching before posting,

some people say that if a fail 001 is not caused by forcing wrong bandsplit on a radio then its the caps...

VHF FROM DAYTON both VHF split 1 and 2
ok before the shop programmed it, it was set up on one freq 151.5125 with the mode name TEST. but not set to transmit.
(i did not recall it flashing fail 001 before it was reprogrammed)

after reading, and adding some ham stuff, they dumped it in, and after that it says fail 001, recieves fine, but pulses tx for a sec then says fail 001 it also alternates quickly from time to time flashing fail 001.

so i took all the panels of this radio looking for caps with leakage, all boards i could find, even the pulled out the VCO and flipped it over...... i cant find any etched traces around caps, any leaking caps or anything visually out of the ordanary, they all look like good boards. there was a bit of flux residue around the PA tabs, but thats not that un common in my opinion.

other spectras have been programmed without this problem

any other ideas?

You say your radio is range 1 and 2?? If that is correct (the way I read your post) that is impossible. The radio is 136-162 or 146-174. If you progam a range 2 out of band down to 144 I have never heard of it going fail 001 but perhaps yours is just being picky.

The VCO will operate at different frequencies for receive than for transmit. Since the "TEST" mode didn't transmit, the VCO didn't have to go to that freq, so you probably did not see the FAIL 001 message at that time. Now that you've got a transmit frequency in the radio, it's failing to lock up in a timely fashion, if at all.

Try some other freqs in the 151 range. Also see what happens if you program just a receive freq and no transmit freq in one mode. It's still possible that someone has mixed and matched boards. Get the part number from the VCO board and make sure of its range.

sorry for the confusion, it is acording to RSS 146-174 so thats split 2
all frequencies that wew put into the radio fell within both splits, thats what i was trying to say. i have tried freqs 146..151...154 all the same.
there was a weather recieve freq in the plug, and being that it would be out of range for split 1, it was removed, still same result on reprogram.

they dumped back in the original "TEST" plug thinking it might solve things, but it did not. even then i noticed fail 001 flash on there once or twice.

so even if the VCO is from split 1, it seems it should still work, being that the freqs are still within its range.

Well, the detailed service manual does have a troubleshooting procedure for the VCO, however the end result always seems to end in "Replace" which may not be an option. I suppose you'll have to go through the various steps to see where it's failing.

Sounds like one of the junkers I blew out for $25. Oscillator on the RF board needs replaced.
