I've recently installed an XTVA to be used with an XTS3000.
Looking at the external speaker diagram, pins 3 and 6 must be shorted for an external speaker to work.
If I do not connect an external speaker (no jumper at pins 3 and 6) shouldn't the radio's internal speaker operate normally?
With the XTVA powered up using the red going to 12vdc, black to ground and yellow to ignition sense, the charging portion operates fine. It transmits fine while inside the XTVA. My concern is no audio from the portable's speaker. Is the external speaker mandatory?
I'm using XTVA NTN8561F CONSULE CLOSED-FACE MINI-UHF. This particular unit has no volume control. There appears to be a black rubber boot at the location where a volume control would be located.
As usual, thanks for all your help.

Hi,
The XTVA operates without an external speaker using the radios internal speaker. The radios internal speaker volume is adjusted by one of two ways while in the XTVA:
1. With the volume control at the top of the XTVA which is missing on your unit.
or
2. With the volume control on the Handheld Control Head (HHCH) attached to the XTVA.
The only XTVA's that I have seen with a black rubber boot in place of the volume control are SP models in the transportable base station suitcase units. These require the use of the HHCH.

Tim,
The other thing I remembered is that the Transportable Base Station also has a SP external speaker attached to the XTVA through the 25 pin connector instead of the 6 pin molex connector. So the XTVA you have may be very different from the standard XTVA....

Seth & WD9CMS,
Thanks for the great information. I toyed around with that XTVA yesterday for hours trying to determine why the portable radio's speaker would not operate while the radio was seated within the unit. The only possible conclusion I could think of was that I was missing the RF switch and/or that I needed the amplified speaker to hear the audio. The charging portion, which is the main reason that I purchased this, works very well.
Seth, this is a project I took on at work since people were forgetting to change out the battery in the utility truck. In the past I've been out on errands only to have to turn around to get a charged battery so I wouldn't miss a call.
The HHCH offer is very kind of you but I would never think of taking something that nice, especially for a work project. You're a good friend.
Mystery solved. Thanks again for everything fellas.
