Using messages on XTS3000s

Post by K4RUR »

Hello all,
I have a question that has been keeping me up nights. My friend and I have identical XTS3000s. Astro model IIIs. We set up our message alias lists so they are the same but we cannot send messages between the 2 radios. Is this normal? We get a no ack received message. You can see the red transmit light come on and the red light for receive on the other radio. We tried pressing the PTT to ack it but that doesn't work either. Are the messages only able to be sent between the dipatcher and the radios or did I miss something?

Thanks,
Lowry K4RUR

The MDC Status/Message feature you're trying to use normally can only be recieved by a dispatch console or similar equipment, as you surmised. The notable exception to the above is that a Systems Saber can usually decode status/message packets, though if memory serves it will not ACK them (in other words, your radio will sit there spitting out the status/message packet until it hears an ACK, and since the Systems Saber doesn't send one, it'll keep on doing it until kingdom come).

You can still use the MDC Call/Page features between your radios, however.

Thank you sir. I was afraid of that. Oh well, it seemed like a good idea.

Take care,

But P25 SMS is coming

From the last MTUG meeting

Up to 300 pre-defined messages available
Free-form messages up to 200 characters
Uses existing data pipe of ASTRO systems
Can also send/receive text messages

I wonder what will be announced in 2 weeks at the annual meeting
