220 MHz GP300 Problems

Hey Guys,

Recently, I picked up a couple of 220 MHz GP300 portables off of eBay. Well our shop's copy of the RSS (Ver. R08.02.00) won't even read them, and after letting a friend have a try at them, the DTMF keypads stopped working. This all leads me to believe I may have a codeplug problem.

I've got two questions:

1) What version of RSS is required, to program these radios? I suspect they're of Korean origin.

2) Will sending a known good codeplug, to each radio, restore the DTMF feature?

Some notes:

Toolkit (Ver A1.50) doesn't work, in fact that's what may have wiped the DTMF feature clean from the codeplug.

The portables' specs are:

- Model #: AZP02YPC20C5AA
- GP300 VHF 20 / 25 kHz, 3 watt
- 216.0 - 223.0 MHz
- 16 Channels

Any help or suggestions on this matter would be appreciated.

I Had one years ago, I remember having to using the GP350 software but I don't remember the exact version.

I also had to modify the MDF file to take the 220 frequencies. You may want to check the GP300 pages on batlabs and look for the 220 radio info.

It's been so long since I've dealt with a 220 moto radio and I don't have any notes nor any programming capabilities since upgrading to astro only capability last week.

First, I need to figure out which version RSS is required for these radios. Since they're considered export radios, /\/\ has already taken the defensive posture over the whole type-acceptance issue & legal operation of the radios (even in the Amateur Band) within the US.

GP350 software is unable to read them as well. I'm not sure modifying the mdf will allow the RSS to read the radio, and it's unknown if these radios are considered GP280s. They've got a manufacturer date of 11-24-1996; Made in Malaysia By Motorola.

Even after the RSS issue is resolved, I still need to get a valid code plug, to write back into the radios.

Those are the two hurdles I need to overcome, or this little project is dead in the water.

I'm guessing here, but since no else is helping I'll give it my best shot.

I think you need the Asian version of the GP300 software. It sounds like your friend has it. Then, you need to hack the mdf file so that it thinks your model should have DTMF. Apparently your supplier has added DTMF to a radio that originally didn't have it, and has hacked his RSS to enable the feature. After this, the radio can only be programmed with hacked RSS if you want to keep that feature. Hopefully, he will tell you what change(s) to make when you tell him your problem.

If the radios require the Asian version of the GP300 software, it must be a newer version of the RSS, than the one that shop had, since their copy couldn't even read the radios, and toolkit screwed up the DTMF front panel option in the code plug.

The guy I got the radios from wants a bit too much money just to 'fix' the DTMF issue, and even more $ to reprogram the radios. Personally, I think he's asking a bit too much, but he's well aware that he has a 'captive' audience, so I'm already at a disadvantage.

I would have thought someone on the board had run into these obstacles before, and hopefully found a solution. I guess that's why these radios were never very popular - too hard to get support for any issue. Hard lesson to learn.

I don't know what is the latest version, but you need GP300/GP280 216MHz RSS to program those radios. The part number is PMVN4003E (Version 2.16 on Sep 98). You might be able to find one, if you look around in .cn domain.
