Will an ASTRO Saber Operate on a P25 9600kb System?

Post by rmiles »

I was always under the impression that the AS could NOT operate on a P25 9600kb control system. Am I wrong?? Today I saw an AS that has the following option flashed in.

Q361/G361 Digital APCO-25 IMBE Trunking (9600kb Control)

How can this be?? SREC??

Also, anyone know the latest HOST/DSP version for the AS?

To work on a 9600 kps system an astro saber must:

1. Be flashed with Q361
2. Have a 1 Meg Vocon
3. Have DSP 6.1x.xx (DSP 7 or 8 will not support it)

It should also be noted that having that as a flash option will cause problems if you want to use the radio on a 3600 system.

idk about DSP having to do with anything...

The HOST has to be version 6.....

and YES the Astro Saber can do Astro25 aka 9600baud trunking. Case and point, the Michigan State Police... the system has been up for several years in most areas and troopers were issued the all mighty Astro Saber and the huge huge batteries that go with them... not to mention the fun 800Mhz Dipole antenna to make the unit even larger.

OK, I stand corrected. Thanks for the info. This radio was HOST 07.70.00.00 and DSP N08.03.03 The radio was read with CPS ver R04.01.02 and the code plug displayed on the screen. When I went to save it, I got a runtime error message and CPS terminated. I tried to read and re-write the current codeplug back into the radio and had the same problems. I don't know what's wrong.

The problems you wrote of on 3600kb systems, are you speaking of forced affil. or something else?

forced affiliation will be one of the things you'll encounter, and with the host you have, if the flash is supporting 9600 trunking, you'll get a "FAIL001" on P25 9600 trunking personalities.

Josh,

So what your saying is that even thought it's flashed for Q361, I will not be able to program in a p25 system becaus the host is higher than 6.x? Why would the newer host not support that?

"...Why would the newer host not support that?..."
___________________________________________

1 meg is not enough memory to hold all the code it takes to support full feature sets for both system types - so - 6.x has full features on 9600 systems and reduced features on 3600 systems. 7.x has full features on 3600 systems and does not work on 9600 systems regardlses of what flash someone has shoved into the radio.

Obviously, Motorola would not sell either a radio or a flash upgrade kit that has a feature set that is incompatible with the radios firmware.

BTW - the same exact situation exists for the XTS3000.

Would this HOST/DSP support rebanding? I did a search for a firmware revsion history on batlabs but could only find info from 2004.

One of the *big* reasons to jump to the -5000 series radios if you've got a P25 system...
