MDT questions - linux, connectivity

Post by jantman »

Hello,

I have a few questions regarding MDTs, such as the ones made by Motorola...

1) Do these units have any accessoty connectors such as serial, parallel, USB, PCMCIA slot, etc.?

2) Is it possible/easy to establish a 2-way link between two of these, or a link between one of them and a regular computer?

3)*** Has anyone tried loading any varieties of Linux/*nix on them?

Which MDT?

I'm sure my MW800 would take Linux wonderfully... it's just a P4 Mobile. Ditto on the MW520s. Dunno about the older stuff.

How about the touchscreen? I assume the driver is proprietary?

I have a couple of ML900s.
I have one hard disk with RHL on it and one running XP
No problems.

I doubt he's talking about ML900s. I'm expecting he's talking about the old amber CRT shite, but who knows.

Sorry for the delay in response...

I haven't selected a model yet... I was wondering if anyone has had previous experience before I find a used one...

Older (well, cheaper) is better, so I guess not the current models...

oh so you haven't picked up one yet? In that case, i would go to your favorite distro, find a driver that is nicely supported by the kernel you will run (or if you are capable of it - home-roll your own) and then do what i do with hardware...purchase one that has support, open the package nicely, and keep the reciept in good order...so it can go back if it doesn't work as advertised.

Do you atleast have a distro picked out yet? Do you have any other linux experience? Lets try to find your level of comfort....
