XTS5000 Nextel Provision ?

Post by Rayjk110 »

Do you think that in the future with the XTS5000 700/800MHz split radio, that Motorola would be able to develop it to work on NextTel's PTT network?

Just a thought -

nope, those two will never - ever - mix.

i'd be happy to have LTR trunking as a flash feature in the 5k tho - sure would prevent having to carry 1 old POS LTR radio and a 5k at the same time....

Probably Icom's one saving grace on their P25 radios.

Ditto... although my LTR stuff is a 450/480 system... and my UHF XTS is an R1.

Oh well - it'd be an excuse to get another XTS. :P

Hey, I think I saw one of those in a pink blingbling version. :D

Ray, while it wouldn't be necessarily difficult (iDen is just 4-slot TDMA plus VSELP and some proprietary control and adressing stuff), it wouldn't be cost-effective nor would it fit into their business models. They already have "ruggedized" IS iDen phones (the i315, for example) that are still cheap enough to be considered disposable. Plus, and this is just me talking out of my :o , but I don't see iDen being pushed very hard over the next 10 years or so, regardless of whether or not the rumored sale of Nextel's iDen network to the US Government takes place. It's old, it trashes the noise floor of whatever band it operates in, and once Sprint and Verizon perfect their PTT implementations there won't be much of a market for it.

Ah alright. Thanks for the replies.

The reason I asked is because since the XTS5000 already operates in the 800MHz band, I didn't know if a new Flash Code Option along with a new Host/DSP would be able to open up the 800 Rf Deck and integrate the vocoding technology for nextel (unless it's just physically not possible to open up the 800 Rf deck to nextel freq's range)

The RF deck in an XTS5000 already works in the same range as Nextel. Nextel frequencies are intertwined in with the 800MHz commercial band (851-866MHz).

But that's just it.. there is no creating a "flash option" for iDen. It would require a complete rewrite of the firmware just to support VSELP. Then there's the TDMA part, which the XTS RF board in its current state may or may not support. In the long run, it's plenty doable, but just not cost-effective given the limited demand for such a beast. Oh, and forget about having IMBE and iDen at the same time.. that much is pretty close to impossible.
