XTS5000r's, Whores, and Recasing

Post by fogster »

What is an XTS5000r? Is it simply a "rugged" XTS5000? It looks (at least to an untrained eye like mine) exactly like the normal XTS5000.

Short of the 123ABC radios, is there such a thing as a whored-out XTS5000? I've seen a lot of XTS5000s for sale with FPP capabilities, but I thought Motorola only ever made a handful of them. Are people 'frankenflashing' them? Will the 'classic' lab software even write to an XTS5000? (N.B.: I'm not planning on doing this, nor asking for RSS; I'm only curious how it's being done.)

Finally... I'm currently watching a very-beat-up XTS5000 with a nice (legit) flashcode. If I buy it and a recase kit, is there a way to transfer the serial number and flashcode to the new case, or am I left with an XTS5000 with no tags?

When you recase a radio, the tags stay on the chassis. This always amazes me when people say the radio has no tags because it's been recased. The tags have nothing to do with replacing the housing. Only if you have to replace the chassis itself will you then have to touch the tags. The Jedi line was common with chassis replacement due to the famous antenna set coming loose.

As for the whore flashed 5K's... They are out there, and it can be done.. For the sake of this conversion, consider it almost impossible for the "average Joe" to touch a 5K like so many have done with a 3000. I'll leave it at that..

Just my 2 cents.

Now you've piqued my interest. More recent version of lab?

Reading and editing raw EEPROM and Flash images from the radio would be another way.

Unsoldering and resoldering those chips is no picnic. Too easy to apply too much heat and melt off a bunch of other stuff.

Yeah I call BS on the whole 'untouchable' claim on the XTS5000. I have seen in recent times a number of 800MHz RF boards for sale that were working pulls. WHy else would they be pulled if not to be replaced by VHF or UHF boards? Buy a cheap 800MHz XTS5K and swap RF decks... seems like a good idea to me if you know the right people. I bet the right people even hang out here, or were banninated at some point.
Look, it's not in my nature to be mysterious. But I can't talk about it and I can't talk about why.
