FYI Li-Ion battery - NTN9862C Problem

Post by rapier6360 »

In an earlier posting I said we were having problems getting batteries to work with our Motorola battery analyzer -pocket. Evidently the Magnetic attraction between battery and the pocket was not enough to keep the battery locked in. This had not been a problem with the earlier NTN9862A or any aftermarket batteries. I received a couple tech support emails saying they had never heard of this problem. Seven weeks later and after much prodding, they finally came back and said the batteries were not compatible with the conditioning/analyzer pockets - DUHHHH
They did say we could buy a version of their Impres six-pack charger with a digital display if we needed to know what the remaining lifespan of a battery was (MAh).

Is your Motorola analyzer even designed for Lithium Ion battery packs? The 9862 series are all IMPRES, and designed to be managed and conditioned in an IMPRES charger, not with some other analyzer.

Yes our motorola conditioner and conditioner pockets are designed for Li-ion The previous 9862A model had no problems in our analyzer. See my previous posting for moto part numbers

NTN9862C BATTERIES

Post by rapier6360 »

See my earlier posting - but to shorten the process, the conditioners/ battery maintenance systems BMS are model WPLN4079BR here is my email text to Moto
We recently purchased a large batch of XTS3000/5000 batteries
(NTN9862C). Several were returned to us today as bad. I will be sending
them back for warranty replacement. While attempting to analyze them on
our Motorola battery conditioner, I found that they would not fit
properly in the XTS pockets (WPPN4086AR). The front will not stay
seated against center contacts. This was not a problem with the NTN8610
or NTN9862A batteries. Neither has it been a problem with any of the
aftermarket batteries we have tested. In order for the batteries to work
with the conditioners we have to rubber band the batteries to the
pockets. This is not a standard we want to establish.
It is not a matter of a single pocket or a single battery. I tried at
least a half dozen pockets and I tried several "good" batteries. We have
just concluded that the NTN9862C has no magnetics which pull the
batteries into the pockets.
98% of these batteries are already in the field so recovery is a real
issue. We need your help in resolving this issue ASAP.

Answer: We have found the reason that the NTN9862C batteries are not fitting
in
your chargers correctly is that they are not compatible with either
the
WPLN4079BR or the WPPN4086AR.

From the research I have done, the part numbers I gave you on the
phone
may not work for you. I will continue to look into this to find a
solution for you.

Thats Moto's answer but, ultimately if the NTN9863A's work but the NTN9862C's don't - is the problem really with the BMS's or the pockets????
