XTL 5000 Help w4 to w3

Post by agtkgv »

Hi,

I am trying to convert 2 XTL5000's from Low/Mid Dash Mount w4/5 to w3's. I have the control heads and the Y cable. I am trying to find the correct interconnect board, flex cable, and other needed parts for the chassis. I already know the motorola remote mount kit does not use the same board as the w3. Can anyone help?

W4/W3

Post by Jason »

Unfortunately, this isn't going to happen with just a hardware swap.

The radio is not going to recognize the W3 control head mic, as it is looking for a W4 control group. You will probably get some crazy fail codes on the display mic, if anything.

In the Astro Spectra world I know what you are wanting to do is possible, however, in the Astro25 world, without flashing the mobile to a new model number, you wont get any results. That being the part that you can't do in the field.

Anyone else care to elaborate further?

What radios do you own?: APX

I think that summed it up in a nutshell.

Stupidity creates job security!

If your radio has old firmware, programming it with the latest CPS will not add any new features unless you have the latest firmware to match..

CPS = Customer Programming Software, Not CPS Software.

Yup, your pretty much screwed. I know of Astro Spectra's that were changed from 5's to 9's or something like that, but it required a shipment to the depot, signed off by a higher up Moto offical, and it was a large customer. But if IIRC, the radios that came back where new radio's and not reflashed radios.

Though, you could always try...

Radio

Yep exactly the point I was making PJ you arent going to get /\/\ to "reflash" a radio into a different model.

The radios may have common parts, but they are different, physically, and software/firmware-wise.

Sell or re-assign the radios, and buy the W3's you need.

Actually the CPS allows you to change the type of control head on an XTL5000, for a w3 it says "warning: changing the control head type from wX to w3 is not recommended. This is not supported by the radio hardware. Do you want to proceed? Yes or No"

My guess is that it refers to more than just a control head swap being needed, probably just the interconnect board like an astro spectra???

yes, you can change the control head via software on the XTL series radios (at least the 5k you can)

i was under the impression that you could swap between W4-W9, even O5 without any problems... but that the W3 / O3 were "off limits"

if the message you received is accurate, it lends me to believe that if you change the hardware of the radio over to W3/O3... that it will work.

good luck finding the part numbers - there's lots of stuff in the manual that is totally out to lunch... recommend a coffee and a chat on 1800findmymotopart.com

I have cofirmed that it can be done, and it in fact has been done, there are just a bunch of parts that are needed. ie. the interconnect board to remote mount the unit and the ribbon cable that connects the board to the chassis. I just need the part numbers. I guess I my have to order the service manuals for it.

I called Motorola about changing the flavor of my Astro control head and was told that the Astro Spectras could NOT be changed, but the XTL5000's could. I think it would have to be re-flashed, but other than the hardware swaps; it shouldn't be that big of a deal.

Keep us updated on the progress. Inquiring minds want to know...

No reflashing is neded if the radio is a W1 model, it will support all head types.

Just a hardware change and a let the software know change, and your good to go.

The smell, you know that gasoline smell, the whole hill. Smelled like... victory. Someday this war's gonna end...

Good luck with parts ID. Be ready to draw, or otherwise send a sketch to those guys... It's taken me almost 4 orders to get a stupid antenna coupling kit (which, hopefully is 0180351A28) which was "missing" some how from 0180356A96...

Just make sure you can send something - to draw out what they want. It's gotta be 10x easier for them.
