M1225 Dead??

Ok, this radio is pissing me off.. So hopefully someone knows what i am dealing with here.

This radio came to me in the following condition.. You turn it one and the front panel lights up, 4ch model, and if you turn up the volume all the way you can hear some light static.

I connected it to the RIB and got it to read and write, so i programmed it, and it worked just fine for a day.

Then today i power it up again and its back to the same condition, turn it on and the front panel lights up, no beep, and light static if you turn the volume up all the way. Only now it wont read and write with the CPS anymore.

Any ideas??

My first thought would be the 7.94 mhz timer crystal for the microprocessor. You should be able to see a spike on a spectrum monitor using a probe in the area of the crystal.

Is that the crystal on the top of the board on the left hand side?

There is a crystal to the left of shield that looks like a standard crystal. That is the 16.8 mhz reference crystal. The timer sits forward from that. Probably covered by the display flex cable. I'm looking at one here and it is black but I've seen them in white also. Should say 7.988 on it.

Ok, this one is black. Unfortunately i don't have the test equipment to do anything with it, and i don't have a replacement for it.

Off to the for sale forum to find a replacement radio i guess, probably keep this one for parts. It did transmit and receive good when it was working.

Thanks, but its a moot point. The radio as it turns out has water damage to the bottom side of the circuit board, looks pretty bad, so i salvaged some re-useable parts and the rest is destined for the trash.

Just as well. I came into a company once upon a time that was using those in a fleet. They worked fine until they warmed up a little during use. The deviation was amazing.
