Scrambling?

I'm looking at equiping a bunch of radios with some type of voice inversion scrambling. They are either going to be HT1000's or Kenwood TK-280's. Either radio type is available, I'm just wondering what my options are, and how much $$ I'm going to be looking at.

It's not for anything secret squirel, just for a customer who uses them in his fishing business, and he's getting tired of the competition listening in. They're on a private VHF channel, so no issues about the law.

Transcypt would be my choice. They have all sorts of options from basic inversion to good stuff.

i'd use transcrypt too and use ht1000's, they plug right into the acc socket in the radio with no soldering or alterations to the radio.

Be careful about using one of these devices in connection with any system that uses receiver voting.

It's because voting works by comparing audio quality. Because it doesn't sound like voice, the voters may not vote the signal correctly.

I believe that's what RKG's point is.

Good to know. We have a voting receiver system here and all of our Jedi HTs also scramble.

Alex is on point; I actually forget all of the technical details, but a couple of years ago a department more or less on its own went out and bought a bunch of Midian boards without investigating how they would work with the voted system. All had to be removed, and when we got involved we concluded that if you really want encryption with a voted system, you had to go high end with a product from Motorola, designed to work with such systems.
