Commander Mic (RMN5021A and RMN5023B); RF Desense Issue
Anyone have any experience with the RF issues involved with the tech bulletin (SRN1517) with the Commander series mics?
We have a fell on backorder with no release date in sight.

- What radios do you own?: XTS5000, APX2000
i am using a commander-esque mic on my xts3500R Mod III... its the mic with the vol up/down and the orange 10-13 button on it...
first and foremost, atleast with my mic, the mic itself doesn't seem to connect when the radio turns on, but rather about 2 seconds later... when i activate the power on the xts3.5k, the radio beeps out of the radio speaker, then beeps 2 seconds later on the RSM.
otherwise the side buttons on the RSM work 90% of the time, 9% of the time delayed, button press, 1 second delay, action... 1% of the time, they fail... i just don't bother to use it anymore... 10-13 button is 100% working, i have it mapped for something else.
audio is great tho, both in and out, and it held up to the weather today, had a nor-easter-esque storm and i was required to stand in the 50mph wind/rain for 3 hrs without any failure of equipment. unfortunately i am now forced to be /\/\ for life after an experience like today... XTS / RSM held up 100%

Following is the SRN:
SRN-ISO
SRN - 1517A
APC - 372
March 2006
Deadline: December 31, 2006
Distribution: Service: MOL: Two Way Portable
From: Astro/XTS Portable Series Subscriber Product Group
Subject: Commander Mic (RMN5021A and RMN5023B); RF Desense Issue
Symptoms:
The Commander RSM, part number RMN5021A (standard) and RMN5023B (submersible), has demonstrated an RF desense
condition in the presence of a strong 700 or 800MHz RF field. The failure condition observed is the radio will transmit and
receive on a channel/talkgroup different than that of the RSM's channel knob.
• The RSM exhibits greatest susceptibility to this condition if it is powering up in close proximity to the radio antenna,
while the radio is transmitting.
• The condition does not occur on radios operating in the VHF and UHF frequency bands.
• It is recommended that the RSM not be clipped to the base of the mic cord or to the antenna at any time.
Potential Problem Radios:
Any 700MHz or 800MHz XTS Series Portable Radio, which use the RMN5021A or RMN5023B RSM.
Cause:
RF getting into the RMN5021A or RMN5023A/B Commander Mic is causing RF desense with the microprocessor in the mic
head. This is caused by turning on the radio with the mic head in close proximity to the radio’s antenna. As stated above, this
only occurs on radio’s operating on 700 or 800MHz systems.
Corrective Action:
For users on a 700 or 800 MHz system only that are experiencing this problem, please contact Motorola at 1-800-422-4210 to
order replacement Commander Mics and reference this SRN.
Informational Only Bulletin. No labor warranty is implied, intended or authorized.

No problems with desensing, although ours are used in UHF-low and not 700/800 MHz.
My problem is dealing with users that can't grasp the way the radio handles "channel" changes. Basically, it goes by the last user input, so if the user goes from ch1 to ch4 using the RSM, then later rotates the radio knob 1 click, he is on ch2 and not ch5. Ditto for the "reading" of the RSM 2 secs after the initial startup. Radio is on ch1, mic is on ch2, turn on radio, it boots to ch1, then reads mic settings and rolls to ch2.....
I tell them time after time to keep both the radio and the RSM on the same "channel" just to avoid confusion.
Again, though, no problems with desense.

Program the radio to lock the radio controls when the commander mic is attached, and that will solve your problem.5-sides wrote:My problem is dealing with users that can't grasp the way the radio handles "channel" changes. Re: Commander Mic (RMN5021A and RMN5023B); RF Desense Issue
Guys,
What are the differences between RMN5021A and RMN5023B?
Only that is RMN5023B submersible (and as result have no 3.5mm earphone jack)?
They both have the same sound on receive? Or non-submersible RMN5021A sounds better (clearly & etc.)?

I am biggest fan of XTS2500 and ASTRO Digital Saber.
