This forum is dedicated to discussions pertaining specifically to the Motorola ASTRO line of radios (those that use VSELP/IMBE/AMBE), including using digital modulation, digital programming, FlashPort upgrades, etc. If you have general questions please use the General or Programming forums.
Host: AP_ R03.10.06
DSP: M 04.03.10

Printed on the back is the FLASHport number: 0000080020008.
I know the radio is Analog only from the FP number.
From searching BL I can see I should be able to use this radio as a type II 800MHz analog radio. This is kind of why I bought it. But reading posts it seem it’s possible to upgrade the radio to Astro digital. Is it worth the effort or should I just us it as an analog only radio?
You could look for a 403-470 model with an IMBE vocon (they are fairly cheap these days) and swap the vocons out. You'd have to do a little hacking, but then you'd have a digital 800 unit and could sell the now useless 403-470 as an analog only Astro Saber.
Some folks on this board could probably even update your old vocon so you wouldn't even have to do that.
The flash-code shows up as "analog-only" operation, but on old VSELP radios, it would show up as "conventional operation" which indicated that VSELP was an option.
I have never come across a VSELP-era radio that didn't have VSELP in it, wheras IMBE radios are frequently 'analog only'.
I checked the flash code and you are right it's anlog only type II trunking. What are you using to decode the DSP numbers, could you point me to a link or thread on this site? Right now I think I will run it as anlog only and in the future upgrade it to digital.
161 I will look in the for sale section to see what I can find, when you say change the VCON is that the complete logic board. If so I could just buy one with the right flash right? The system I want it for is a type II digatal/analog APCO 16a, so will the advanced flash code (APCO 25) work backward compatable to 16a?
Thanks, Joe

The HOST/DSP seems to be old VSELP.

I had one. VHF Astro Saber 1, HOST R03.xx/DSP I05.xx, flash 000008-002000-8. Build date of 1997, came from a certain infamous Ebay seller out of Arizona programmed for Fed stuff and loaded with non-XL DES crypto.

Care to share who?
Oh come now, surely you've heard of Jason Dunbar of Fabtech Industries, aka "audiowrx", "weraccessories", and a couple of others. He's been blowing out surplus Fed Astro gear for the last 2 1/2 years. You can catch some good deals from him, you just have to know what you're buying.
I would actually imagine a "cockknocker" to be much more vile than a dickhead. Inecentlayly I recently underwenrt a vasectomy and I can say with undue certainty; that this man was a "cockknocker".
I appologize in advance for the sperm of the moment comment!

Jim,
I'll attribute your spelling errors to still being in shock from the vasectomy. Thanks for clearing up the mystery of the "CockKnocker". Now we know that this "audiowrx" guy is moonlighting as a surgeon.
