Muting encrypted astro traffic on a XTS3000

Post by jedi_saber »

Operating with almost 90+ % astro traffic on simplex channels, my radio unmutes for encrypted traffic that I am not keyed for (different keys, garbled, encrypted sound - extremely irritating).

Is there a way for the radio to stay muted unless it detects transmissions in the clear or with the proper key? I recall this feature on similar xts5000's where the radio stayed muted and the LED would simply flash twice.

Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

The radio decides whether to unmute or not using the key ID you enter into the KVL after the key. If you have two groups using different keys, but the same KID, your radio won't know the difference and it'll try to decode the traffic anyway.

Otherwise, check that you don't have the radio in monitor mode.

IIRC, if you have "Proper Code Detect" enabled, it will mute on encrypted traffic that you don't have the key for.

Syntrx is right... that's why all of our keys use weird KIDs.

Where do I find that option?

And thanks, I will try to make some changes. If the radio is programmed for no secure hardware installed, will it still open up for crypto traffic?

Yup, I just tried it on my Astro Saber. When I have "proper code detect" disabled, I hear the R2D2 sound of encryption if I don't have the key. However, with it enabled, as long as I don't have the key in my module, I don't hear anything.

The option is in the "Secure" options tab in CPS. I know it's in RSS, I just can't recall where ATM.

From the main menu:
F4 --> F3 --> F2 --> F6
F6 won't show up unless you have "Secure Hardware Equipped" set to Yes. This option is under F3.
