Astro Spectra head change (W5 -> W7?)

Post by dxon2m »

Hey everyone,

Do I need to dump a new S record and codeplug in order to make a head change on a Astro Spectra or just replace the faceplate and electronics? I have a W5 head an would like to change it to a W7.

Thanks

The codeplug needs to be updated to support the W7.

Updated by using MTSX lab tool? Or just CPS?

By dumping a new s-rec or editing the existing one.

I had experience in bit banging analog spectra. Can the same procedure be applied using Spectra lab? Changing the model number on the MLM and command board, read and write back the codeplug without changing anything?

Can you elaborate more please?

There is no bitbanging an astro spectra. Totally different than the spectra. Only a few people know how to modify existing records. If you dont know how then its a s-record push.

Its a shame those who do know, do not want to share the info, if it was as easy as changing your s-record, there would be a lot less fubar tuned radios around.

If those who do know, DID share; thaey'd be in deep, deep S4it with Motorola, and that would only make our "fun" more difficult and seem even more diabolical to Motorola. That would be almost as bad, if not worse, than posting free software online.

That may be true, but how could it be more damaging that what most anyone can already do? I see radios on Ebay alot with mucked up flashcodes, look at how many people have the whoreflashes. I really think adding just the features you need, would be a lot better than dumping in crap that doesn't work right, and having miss tuned radio flying around. Anyways, I guess one day someone will speak up with the info, then we can customize our astro's the right way, we just need someone to do for astro's what Natedog did for the spectra...

Motorola doesn't care about the analog Spectra anymore, it's been out of production (and support) for years. The newer line of radios however, they do care about very much. If "Person X" were to post detailed instructions on how to modify the s-record to change flashcodes or anything else, you can bet that person would be in a world of trouble.

A lot of people can "hack" into Direct TV, Microsoft XP, VISTA, etc, but you can bet your sweet ass that if they were to publish the details on a blog, website, or forum (or make it known that they could); you wouldn't be hearing from them for a while. I'm not supporting Motorola's (nor anyone elses, for that matter) contentious, arrogant attitude about proprietary rights, but they are protected by law. Besides; they would just come up with another, and probably more difficult, way of keeping it out of our reach. Yeah; I know people do it on eBay all of the time, but bragging about circumventing their technology is just plan stupid, for so many reasons, that it's almost overwheming.

I see your points, I just guess the difference is the use of lab software to force s-records is just more widely known. In reallity you are doing the same thing, you just get a better outcome if you could edit your s-record. But then Mother-M would not get as much money repairing these messed up radios. Oh well, one day it will happen. Maybe its a good thing end of support is this year.
