We need a LOT more background on what you are using now, and what you would like to accomplish. There are many variables, and with those variables, is variable equipment pricing.

What system are you on? Pal800? A public safety 800 trunking system? A private company repeater? Details are helpful.....

Come to think of it, whoever runs/maintains your radio system would be a good place to start. Some won't activate older radios on a TRS even if they are rebandable. Also, if this is a rebanding subject, I would think this should be in the bargaining with sprint/nextel.

its a 800mhz public safety system. I would ask our Admin over the radios for the county but he will tell us who he wants us to buy it from and they would charge an arm and leg. They are not replacing radios, they are buying new ones

People have gone to jail up in Michigan for doing just what your asking about. If you
don't like the radio system administrator and the way things are being handled, better
find another radio system. He has total control of the trunking system.

You just can't drop radios into that system and expect them to work. Each radio on
the trunking system has a unique ID assigned to it. The system controller (computer)
keeps track of each ID and what system site location and talkgroup it is authorized
to use. Trying to put other radios onto the system won't work as each radio needs
to have the ID assigned to it as well as all the trunking information needs to be
programmed into them.

To just take a radio and attempt to program it up for trunking use on the system will
create legal issues. You will end up with operating an unlicensed radio, operating on
a trunking system without the system administrator's authorization and probably would
be charged with causing interference. Not a good position to be taking.

Whoa, you're jumping to conclusions a little quickly. He said that their system admin will tell them were to buy radios, and they are looking at another option for buying them. He hasn't said that they won't have them on the system legally.

I'll admit that without better info (is it P25 now, will it be in the future, what radios will the system admin actually activate, etc) that there's not a lot to add here.

Oh, yeah. Buy some XTL5000s with all options, that'll set you up, of course you will only be able to buy 20% of what you actually want
