We have two XTL 5000s, one VHF, one 700/800. One has the W4 head and one has the W7 head. Will the O5 control head work with these radios? Is it a simple plug and play install?
Thanks

The O5 control head will work on the XTL5000 radios. However and I stress the however,
you will need to make some major changes to the control group. You didn't say if you had
a front mount or a trunk mount. Kind of need to know as the whole front panel on the
radio needs to be changed out. If it is a trunk mount, you will need a whole new control
cable and the ignition power cables.
The O5 head uses a funky looking round black plastic control cable connector. The control
cable is about as big around as a serial computer cable. The ignition power cable is the
same kind of round connector with a red ring around it.
This can be done, but at what price are you willing to pay?

we have dash mounts, being set up as control bases off our dispatch system. Sounds to $$$$, so I think we will stay with what we have. Thanks for heads up!!

Re: Motorola XTL 5000 HLN1471B 05 control head
Also I have heard that you need to have the radio upgraded to work with the O series head. Much like going between W4, W5 etc. The radio has to have the software to recognize the new head. Just more $$$$$$$.
Re: Motorola XTL 5000 HLN1471B 05 control head
Since I just did one of these conversions I'll add a few things. The radio may need to be flashed with the latest firmware for it to recognize the new control head. Also if you run any type of encryption you will need to order a retention interface module to replace the old one. There is a certain order that you need to do things to make it work right and some things will have to be changed in the codeplug in order for it to work right. Don't expect much help from Motorola on this procedure because very few of them have ever done this. Also the conversion kit is above price book and does not include the new flash upgrade that you might need and it doesn't include the secure module interface board if you need that. Also be prepared to fix problems in the template after the conversion. I converted the trunk mount Mid power XTL-5000's to Dash mounts with 05 control head. I've only did two so far but have 13 more to complete.
