Question: MDC1200 or ASTRO status messages

Question: MDC1200 or ASTRO status messages

I can see from the specs that MDC1200 and ASTRO status messages have two 8 bit fields called User Status and Unit Status. The user status appears to be filled with an index value taken from the status list in the code plug.
I can't find out how to get the unit status filled in and I would also be interested to hear how it works and how folks use it.
