Issued an XTS5000
I have had a VHF HT1000 for some time on analog conventional. Today I was issued an XTS5000 on 800 mHz P25 trunked system. Are there any tips tricks etc that I ought to know as I am getting familiar with this radio and Impress battery charging system? Any URLs for things I should read up on?
Re: Issued an XTS5000
Biggest problem you need to train everyone for is that you can't start speaking as soon as you mash the
PTT button. You have to wait for the "go ahead" tone beeps and then wait like on your old repeaters and
then you can talk. Takes some getting use to.
Next issue is trying to figure out which talkgroup you should be talking on.

Thank you for the tips. We all use iDen quite a bit as well, so I suspect it will be similar to that in terms of getting a "BONK" if the system is busy, etc.

I'm sorry but someone has to say it. Just handing trunked radios to
everyone in an agency without any training at all sounds like a recipe
for trouble, unless everyone in the place is a techie like you probably
are.

Tom,
I am very sorry if I misled you. We did receive training on the radios. We were scheduled for two four 4 training sessions on Wednesday and Thursday. However, we probably only went about 2-1/2 hours each day rather than the full 4 hours. I am just looking for any additional tips for this particular model. For example, I still haven't determined if there is a programmable function button configured for nuisance delete for talkgroup scanning.

That would depend on how the radios are set up and if they allowed a button for that
function. There are a number of software driven options and it is all dependent on
who programmed the radio to do what. Not much help for the grunt in the field
if they were not told what buttons do what.

Re: Issued an XTS5000
There is a pretty neat feature in the Astro 25 Portable software that enables a programmer to print out a set of User Guides for a given codeplug. These show a picture of the radio with the controls labelled as per the codeplug, plus a channel card showing the alphas for each channel in each zone. Your system operator could use this to quickly and easily print course handouts that would, in my experience, make the learning process easier for the users.

If I decided to buy a vehicle adapter for this, what are my choices and where are some good places to buy it?

I was looking at these on the Motorola webpage, and I can't tell why there are so many vehicle chargers. They show NTN1606, NTN1607, NTN8560, NTN8561, and RLN4884. They all seem to have the same description. It does look like the NTN1606 and NTN8560 are both for non-keypad portables. The NTN1607 and NTN8561 are both for keypad portables. So in my case, I have a non-keypad portable XTS5000, but what are the differences between the NTN1606 and NTN8560? Is it only that the NTN1606 uses a BNC connector and the NTN8560 uses a mini-UHF or are there some other differences?
Also, I was looking at the PLN7737B Hand Held Control Head. Has anyone here used one of these? If so, how well do they work? Can you still quickly take the XTS5000 in and out of the adapter?
