is there a difference between front and rear controlheads. or just cable :-?

There is a difference in the internal code of the control head.

And... Different button asignments, and the on-off switch is mechanically stopped in the on position.

Some rear heads can be programmend as a normal front head.

Will is right, you can swap them back and forth, however that one bit that is changed will once in awhile bug up the radio, requiring a power off/on cycle.

Yes. You simply have to know which address to change to what. I have converted a trunking only Spectra head to a conventional X9000 head by bit-banging, as well as converting an X9000 rear head to a front head. Why would you not be able to convert a front to a rear?

The problem isn't within the codeplug. Its the hardcoded control head processor.

i have an a9 on a 100watter set up with 2 front control heads one is just programmed as the rear
