XTS3000 and key erase...

Post by boomboy64 »

Hi there, I did do a search and this topic did come up, but very truncated so I'm assuming that the original requester was one of our banninated members (OK, I know it was, cause I've even discussed this with him off-line...). As such, I'm going to re-start it rather than lazarus a cut-up post.

I'm at the office, so I'm going by memory here...

XTS3000 Mdl 3 VHF
R07.70.something
DSP8.something
DES-OFB
infinite key retention

The orange button was set up as nuisance delete. Occasionally (more often than I'd like), hitting nuisance delete would cause a key dump as if I was hitting the purple and orange together. I initially thought that it was maybe a sticky purple button, but it works as advertised and doesn't seem to stick. I have a tendency to check monitor fairly often (old habit) and most of the times that this has happened have been within 10 seconds of a purple press. This particular radio has had this issue both as VHF and in its previous 800Mhz incarnation (completely re-aligned...). The nuisance delete has since been moved to one of the side buttons, but I still hit the orange by force of habit the other day and dumped them again... AAARRRGGGHHH!!!

Any ideas?

I thought Key Erase was a feature that could only be accessed from the Menu on the front keypad. I don not believe that it can be programmed to a button on the side or top of the radio.

Dumping all keys is one of those things that seems statically assigned to certian buttons.

I remember I was once idly banging on the emergency key (also assigned to nuisance delete), and to my surprise, after about 10 taps or so, it dumped the keys. Will have to try it again one of these days and see what the exact behavior is.

The 'emergency zeroize' feature is hard-assigned to pressing the purple and orange buttons at the same time. The manual explains it well and even cautions to hit the purple, hold it in and hit the orange. If you hit orange first, it could go into emergency...

I can get it to dump regularly, but no real pattern.

It really seems so. I've scan on/off on the orange emergency button and nuisance delete on the purple button on my XTS3000 model one in here. For some reason my SecureNet test key (documented in the Motorola manuals, I hear the others say) was corrupted, so that when I talked on our local P25-repeater on 434,900 MHz (-2.0 MHz) that encryption key enabled, the result was just two way garbled audio.

So this was a perfect time to try that feature out, and yes now my radio seems to respond with beeping an infinite number of dots when I press the PTT when on the SecureNet side. In case you wonder it, we're allowed to use the SecureNet here in Finland with those three predocumented and well known test keys, provided that one states his callsign on pure analog as well.
