Quickmount Kits for CDM Series
According to information I just received, IDA has purchased the rights to manufacture quickmounts and hide-a-mics product lines from Valley Industrial Communications of Redding, CA. Quickmount kits are expected to be available for delivery in mid-February. I was told that IDA (800-627-4432) is taking orders now for those who wish.

I second that! Even the fit of the parts was crap. The Pager Geek wrote:AAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHAl wrote:According to information I just received, IDA has purchased the rights to manufacture quickmounts and hide-a-mics product lines from Valley Industrial Communications of Redding, CA. Re: Quickmount Kits for CDM Series
I have over 30 of them on the streets, with NO ISSUES!! On both fire trucks and ambulances that are used every day. If you follow the instructions, and have a little patience, they work fine.
After 5 years I have NOT have had a hardware failure.
Most of the issues revolve around the snap fit design that Moto uses on the CDM heads.

I have 12 units in service in ambulances and fire trucks. Not one problem in over 5 years. I did not use the QM backs, I always used a Motorola back on the remote heads.

Thats probably why, that was my biggest gripe with the 4 or 5 we've done.JD wrote: I did not use the QM backs, I always used a Motorola back on the remote heads.

Re: Quickmount Kits for CDM Series
I have over 20. At LEAST 50% failure rate:
Audio failures
Control Head Failures
Failure to boot (even after putting a delay timer in)
DTMF Issues
Stuck TX which corrected after replacing the dual head unit. (since everything else was fine)
Countless other little things, all go away with a swap out.... then... more problems come back that all point back to these dual head POS.
If you REALLY want dual head CDM, just buy another CDM. It's cheaper than the QM set-up and offers more benefit in the long run.
If you can't tell... I REALLY hate these things.

It appears the their is a trend to 2 radios in the ambulances I service. Give the customer what he wants !!!!
Re: Quickmount Kits for CDM Series
I've always used the M backs as supplied in the Motorola furnished kits, and I've never seen a fit problem. I should have added in my initial post that IDA is supplying a partial kit as of now....you add the second control head, Motorola back for it. They say that may change because they are in contact with M, presumably to buy heads and any other plastic that's needed to be able to provide a complete kit.
Re: Quickmount Kits for CDM Series
This tells me that you did not follow QM's wiring instructions. The power to the "QM interface box" needs to be wired directly to the battery and must be powered all the time. The failures that you describe are the result of the units powering up out of sequence. The Pager Geek wrote: Failure to boot (even after putting a delay timer in)
When I installed the first one, I tried to use delay timers to keep battery drain to a minimum when the trucks were off. When I ran into difficulties, I called the engineers at QM. The interface box can take up to 10 secs to boot up. (Remember it is a computer.) The box is designed to be powered at all times, and like a lot of computers (Like the ones in our vehicles.) works best when powered all the time.
As I said before, if you FOLLOW the instructions, and use the Moto remote head adapters (As JD recommended.) they work just fine.
I always find it interesting when someone thinks they know more about a device than the engineers that designed it. Then complain when it does not work they way they want it.

Alright genius, you asked for it.... (after I've had a few also.)Garyf629 wrote:This tells me that you did not follow QM's wiring instructions. The delay timer / capacitor was REQUESTED to be put in BY THE ENGINEERS. Also, the delay timer is for B+ and Ign of the CDM ONLY. NOT THE QM BOX. But you assume like most narrow minded people.
Here's why: (unless you're too closed minded, then you should stop reading....)
Power is given to the QM unit all the time. When the truck starts during cranking, SOMETIMES the voltage dips to a level that forces the QM box to reboot but not low enough for the CDM to. This causes the QM to reboot and the radio not to. The solution to this was to put a delay timer on the CDM B+/Ign line to force the CDM to boot 5sec AFTER the voltage recovers, which the QM should have recovered from by then.
My complaint is: YOU SHOULDN'T NEED A DELAY TIMER IF IT WAS DESIGNED RIGHT!!!!!!!!!!!
"Here, buy our product, but also by XYZ because we didn't think of that..." Way to go... Warms my heart like this rum and coke.
You've had good luck with your batch, congrats... mine hasn't, and I know a LOT more people who have had the same results as me. I'm voicing my displeasure for such a sh1tty box. I don't claim to know more about the QM box then the engineers, only more about the radio.
It makes no economical sense to buy the stupid thing anyways, but hey... now you can say "We got a cheap dual head radio."
So the next rebuttal... "it's too expensive for dual head from Motorola bla bla bla." Well, go Kenwood! or Dual independent CDM, or maybe you can't afford to have dual head to start with! If you can't do it right, don't do it at all.
bunch of cheap cacks.
