[help wanted with saber KVL cable]

Post by DocHolliday »

Ok guys i have saber portable H99QX~053H and a kvl T3011DX and for some reason can not get a key to load to the radio, any idea or help here please?
I have a partial homemade cord but works fine, I went by the wiring listing here on the site but it was a no go.
SO I was wondering also if maybe its a different set of 3 pins used on the saber instead of the pin 9/11/10 or ant gnd?
Thanks 8)

Try pins 5, 9 & 10.

Dave,
There was no luck there either unless I'm just not getting some of the wiring correct possibly.
The cord I'm using with the kvl only has 4 wires in it. gnd, key, we, key insert are the pins it is wired to on the kvl cord.
I'll keep trying to see what I can come up with..Thanks

Does the AstroSaber go into keyload mode? With the radio on, connect the KVL cable to the radio. It should beep once when you connect the KVL cable to the radio. If no beep, then your cable is definently made wrong.

Also the ground from the KVL connects to 2-4 ground pins on the radio's side. Do you have multiple ground pins on the radio's side of the cable?

He said that it's a Saber not an Astro Saber. The Saber uses the universal connector pins 5 for WE, 10 for keyload and 9 for key/fail.

Doc, what is the FACTORY ID on this radio? This will tell me which manual to use to better assist you. Also what is the p/n of the secure module in the radio? Also remember that on your code inserter cable your connector pins are numbered right to left from the contact side.

DJp126,
The factory i.d. on the saber radio is:H43QXN7139CN
It has the des-xl board in it.
From my understanding, that only 3 pins are used to upload a key to the radio, is this correct?
Pin 9 is key pin 10 is grnd and pin 11 is key insert? If not, then this is where the mistake is being made?
All help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks Guys

My schematic shows four lines used. Pin 5 for Write Enable, pin 9 for key/fail, pin 10 for keyload and pin11 for Key Insert Detect.

Would it be any trouble to maybe request a copy of your layout on this via email so I can try this way see what happens?
Thanks

Another thing, a gentleman had emailed me a manual for the kvl t3011BX model but the one I have is the T3011DX, is there a difference in the pin out on these, if so then thats where I'm goffing to?
I do not have the manual for the BX model.
Thought I would add this, so maybe it would help narrow down abit.

Your cable wiring should be like this.

KVL - SIGNAL - SABER
9 - GRND - 10
8 - KEY - 9
7 - WE - 5
6 - KID - 11

The pinout on all of the KVL models are the same.

Ok Thanks Dave,
Well sad to say I guess both of the des-xl units have gone bad in both of my radios because it still isn't taking the key.
I appreciate all the help you guys have offered.

I would suspect the KVL before two radios being bad. If the KVL is known to be good, what is the part number on your DES modules?

Just to be sure you have the programming cable correct - DJP126 is correct.

Using the pinouts here, I can get my radio to go into "keyloading" mode on the screen but it fails

Im using a old STX speaker mic with:

KVL - to Saber
9 - to - 10
8 - to - 9
7 - to - 5
6 - to - 11

gonna start banging my head off the desk soon

I think I may see your problem. Is the wire going to pin 10 on the Saber also connected to the ground connection on the Saber (the "circle" around the "dot" at the upper left of the accessory connector)? If the ground isn't hooked up, it will not go into keyload mode.

No, not absolutely, but how many circuits have you ever seen that will work with out a ground? Also, check the Batlabs site. It also says that pin 10 and ground should be connected together. I also have an OEM KVL-Saber cable somewhere around here that I'm almost positive has those pins connected, but I unfortunately don't know exactly where it is right now to verify.

He's right - unless its connected to the ring it wont work. Thats how it is on my ASTRO Saber (which uses the same cable)

You were right on the money, soldered a jumper between Pin 10 and the ring ground and it worked first try....

That is absolutely correct. My two cents worth: I've had problems loading AND programming any version of Saber - Astro or not - if you don't have the connector screwed down really snug to the radio. That's the first thing I look for, and it usually solves the problem if I tighten the screw holding the Saber end to the radio. I usually have to cut off both devices, and re-boot them, and try the keyload again, after I've tightened the screw.

ALSO: If your's is a "homebrew"; double check the pins on the underside of the Saber connector to insure that they are all protruding at the same length. Soldering pins on the back of that sucker tends to distort, and sometimes rectract the funky little pins in the Saber connector. I use a small screwdriver or paper clip to extend them all the way out - just be careful not to break them. Saber KVL's and programming can be a strange experience. Even using OEM programming cables, or KVL cables; you sometimes have to wiggle it a bit, once connected to the radio to make a good connection. They're a pain, sometimes...

Thanks, guys. I can't check where the trouble have been, because I purchased OEM cable and audio accessory/keyload adapter. They works fine. But you should properly tight screw on adapter. If no, radio will not go to keyload mode.
