Question about a brand-new NNTN6034A IMPRES battery

Post by w2sjw »

Guys,

Just a quick question - I bought a brand-new NNTN6034 hi-cap battery & put it in my 4114 single-unit charger for easily 4-hours+ tonight. I have a smidge of color blindness, so I pretty much thought the LED on the charger was green. I turned on my XTS, and nothing shows up in the battery icon area. I go to the BATT function on my menu, and all the readings on the battery are '- -' out.

Did I not initialize it properly? Should I put it back in there & leave it over-night? I really don't want to damage this $100+ battery...

Thanks in advance!

Put the battery in the Impres charger.
The red light should go on.
Take the battery out immediately.
Put it right back in the charger.
Now the yellow light should come on.
Leave the battery in the charger overnight.
In the morning the readout should work on the XTS.
If it doesn't you've got a bad battery. Impres
batteries can give problems, so if you can't get
the radio to read it return it for an exchange if
you can.
Do a search on this Board for more information and
you will find the above-described procedure explained
in several locations, but I'm speaking from my own
firsthand experience.

Tom,

Thanks for the quick reply! I'm assuming that your instructions apply to the lithium batteries as well?

All Impres chargers are tri-chem.

Out of curiosity, is that battery new-from-Moto, or new-from-eBay? Don't trust eBay batteries... quite a few of the impres packs on there have been improperly initialized. If the initialization procedure is done improperly, or on a non-impres charger, the impres "brain" is toast. You'll never see a battery gauge for the life of the battery.

If it's a genuine M and Tom's procedure doesn't work, just have your MSS get it exchanged.

It's a brand-new factory sealed unit from Sandy's Communications in Mission Hills, CA.

He was running a 1-day special through his eBay store where that pack in question was $100 + $5 S&H. I couldn't pass up that pack at that price!

Tom's suggestion worked like a charm. I didn't get his reply until 7:30am, and had it back on the charger until 3:00pm. It now reads 100% cap, 4119 MAH, & 1 estimated charge.

Now, I have another quick question about some NNTN4436B packs that I picked up 6 months ago as NOS with 552 date codes. They are displaying the behavior of the battery icon disappearing about 1/2 way through the charge. I got a neat little plastic card from /\/\ about how to charge & store IMPRES packs, and one thing's for sure, I didn't leave those 4436B's in the charger for 14-16 hours when I got them!

I'm not going to cry over spilled milk, because those 4436B's only cost me $18 a piece...

I have faced with similar problem with v. 3.30 charger and NTN9858C batteries.

And I solved it!

Try these steps:
1. One reconditioning cycle;
2. One full discharge in radio;
3. One reconditioning cycle; After that step you must see any number in "EST CHGS" field (for e.g. 2) and "--" in others. This is good news and you have chances to get working Impres technology in this battery!
4. One full charge.

That's all! After you must see values for all 3 Impres parameters!
P.S.
I am not assured that this sequence is an optimum variant (i.e. some steps from this list can be unnecessary), but it has helped in case with my two batteries.

Can't get working Impres technology on new NNTN4437B (alt. to NTN8297A). I get this battery with New In Box XTS5000. Battery contacts absolutely clean that confirms that bettery never been inserted into charger before initial use...

Damn.
