Adjust XTVA HHCH Contrast?

Post by PeterGV »

Is there any way to adjust the display contrast on the HHCH used with an XTVA?

My HHCH is a bit hard to read at night, and I think increasing the contrast a bit (hence darkening up the characters) would help.

Thanks,

Peter

Bump... Anybody? I'd hate to just randomly disassemble my HHCH and start tweaking pots of whatever I find in there...

I'll look on a display tonight, but IIRC there is a pot (only 1) on the front of the display PCB.

Would this be the same with the W3 HHCH? Mine are all over the board as far as contrast, and I'd like to tweak them a little while I have them uninstalled at the moment.

It should be the same display as the W3, and the Astro Saber. The contrast pot is on the front (display side) and is the only pot there.

The W3 adjusts contrast by going into the test mode (hitting the side button five times). No idea if the XTVA does it the same way.

Thanks! Much obliged!!

Now, ah... to embarass myself yet further: How do you actually get the HHCH open?? I thought I'd find a screw holding the two halves together at the mount, but... I'll be darned if I can see one.

Woah... THAT would sure be handy. WHICH side button, isn't there more than one (other than the PTT, of course).

Code3 wrote:To adjust the display contrast:

Press the top side button until you get to "CONTRAST"
Press the Orange Emerg (Middle Top) Button to enter the contrast adjustment
Adjust the contrast using the LEFT and RIGHT Menu arrow keys.
Once you have acheived the appropriate contrast, power cycle the radio.

Enjoy!
I used the search function. I've used this method on a W3, no clue if XTVA is the same.

As per my previous post:

http://batboard.batlabs.com/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=75426

For the W3
To adjust the display contrast:

Put the radio into service mode by pressing the bottom side button 5 times after power up.

Enjoy!

I just tried it on mine, with a radio in and out of the cradle. No go.

I also took my PLN head apart.. there is NO adjustable potentiometer anywhere on the board. I can post pics, if need be.

I can confirm that the "push 5 times to adjust" does NOT work with the HHCH when used with the XTVA. Not too surprising, I guess.

Can somebody give me a clue as to how to get the HHCH open? I don't want to "experiment" on something I really can't afford to replace, you know?

How To Disassemble An Astro W3/XTVA Handheld Control Head

Post by motorola_otaku »

1.) Slide the cable connector boot off the bottom body.

2.) Using a small screwdriver, pop the inner white boot out.

3.) Using the same screwdriver, pop the black plastic retainer clip out, It is not molded around the cable and can be completely removed.

Image

4.) Using the screwdriver again, pop the tab on the RJ45 connector and unplug the cable. It's buried up in there a ways.

Image

5.) Now here's the easy part: the two head housing halves are held together by tabs around the connector boot "lip" and hinged at the top. The two tabs can be popped by hand.

6.) Look on either side of the PCB, and you'll see two pieces of clear plastic wedged in between the PCB retainer tabs and the housing. Pop those out.

7.) Again using the screwdriver, begin gently popping the PCB out of the retainer tabs, starting from bottom to top. Work back and forth across either side until you reach the last one, then the PCB and keypad button membrane will just fall out.

Well this may be to late for the control head, I have uploaded the basic s/m here http://members.trainorders.com/x4449/76 ... us_BSM.pdf

In chapter 8 it tells you to do the same thing that the pictures show.
