Astro Spectra boards for OTAR/AES ability

Post by jcm12 »

Please forgive any ignorance, i'm an electronics technician but not a Motorola expert like many of you.

Do I have this straight? For me to enable AES on an old Astro Spectra, I simply install the Secure module underneath the controller, and apply the purchased flashkey? Are there any particular board revisions I should be aware of with the RF, CMD, and controller connectivity aside from the 1995 upgrade from wide band to narrow band.

Trying to sort through a decade worth of revision notes is a nightmare for us, let alone finding specific information. Our radios are mostly DES able, and need AES ability. Please enlighten me if what I said above is right or wrong. Thanks guys.

Going from memory here but...

To use AES, you will need one of the following hardware boards (drop right in):

HLN1443 AES-256 UCM
HLN1444 AES-256, DES-XL, DES-OFB UCM
NNTN4354 AES-256 UCM
NNTN4355 AES-256, DES, DES-XL, and DES-OFB UCM

For OTAR, you would need to have the correct flash that supports is (already) and if not, you would need to purchase that flash. I don't recall if it matters if you have a 512k or 1MB board installed for support the UCM, but for some reason, I think you need a 1MB radio. I'll see what I can find.

You will also need a KVL3000 loader with the AES option (and any other algo you need to have) to load the AES keys.

But, essentially its plug/play.
