NNTN4941 Cryto Board Issue

Post by N4DES »

Hey guys,

Been working on outfitting a new XTL2500 mobile with DES XL/OFB crypto board and having a heck of a time with it.
The specifics on the radio are the following:

Model - M21URM9PW1AN
Flashcode - 549008-000480-7
Firmware - R11.00.01
DSP - R11.00.00

I have everything installed correctly per the directions and I can't seem to get it to communicate with the radio and I get the 09/10 error and the keyloader doesn't see the board, not like I would expect it to.

I also have the 3 day carrier on it HLN6876.

Any hints?

I believe that is the carrier for the xtl5000 w-series control heads.

You need the correct carrier, if its the same as the XTL5000 O head series then it is MHLN6918B.

Even though HLN6876 subs to MHLN6918B, you will need the newer one.

Thanks for the quick response Jason. I guess I'll look more into it tomorrow.

Jason is right, the XTL 2500 needs the 'new' carrier as the '5k 05. Also don't forget (unless this has recently changed) that that you're limited to a single algorithm in the '2500.

I don't know if that really is the case - the 2500's (at least XTS) were stated to only be able to support one algorithm, but there have already been radios floating around with both XL and OFB in them.

I tend to doubt that the mobile wouldn't support both.

From a crypto perspective XL and OFB are both DES so its still only one algo.

This is the description in MOL - "DES DES-XL DES-OFB ENCRYP KIT" so I just called it as I saw it. ;-)

Well lets just say that I had a little mis-communication with my technician and the correct carrier is in the radio and the mobile now recognizes the board. Seems the problem was the decal on the front was covering one of the two ground connections to the RF shield cover. Once the sticker was peeled back the radio saw the board and it no longer gives the 09/10 error.

Now we have an issue with loading the key. This is the first xtl mobile in the fleet that we have with encryption and my question is should the mobile act like a portable and display "keyloading" on the front? Is there anything special that needs to be done because I get the keyload fail when I try to put the key into the mobile. It is multi-key radio and PIM managment is turned on and 3 keys are turned on in CPS just like I have in my XTS2500 portable that I have no problem keyloading.

We are using the following components - HKN6182A adapter, TKN8531B cable, and an older T3011BX DES/DES-XL keyloader.

Thanks

Mark -

You need to use a T3011DX to keyload any of the astro radios.

That is more than likly your problem.

You can also use a KVL3000/3000+.

Thanks Alex buy why does that BX keyloader work on the astro portables XTS2500 & 5000's with no issues but not on the xtl mobile? Just kind of confused here. Is there that big of a difference?

I would suspect your keyloader has been upgraded to a DX already and that is why it works with the portables. Is the mobile a dashmount or remote mount and where are you keyloading it through?

Its now a remote head xtl2500 and I'm trying to keyload it though the micjack adapter. It was recently modified to a remote from a dashmount configuration.

Quite simply, you cannot keyfill via the mic jack, you need to keyfill via the center GCAI connector on the front of the radio body.

I guess this is different to a hirose?

It used the same hirose HKN6182A adapter. It's the same type as the mic jack on the front of the radio.

Both the Astro Spectra/Astro Spectra+ and the XTL series radios use the TKN8531 Hirose keyfill cable, in conjunction with an adapter to the specific type of radio. The Astro Spectra/Astro Spectra+ and the XTL 5000 with a W series head configuration use the Hirose to 10-pin mic adapter, part number 5880219R01. The XTL 5000 with O series head and XTL 2500 with M series head use the Hirose to GCAI adapter, part number HKN6182_.

And yes, a Hirose and a GCAI connector are completely different.
