AMREL MLT486SLC Com Port enable help

AMREL MLT486SLC Com Port enable help

This 486 laptop has a built in mouseball on the front, a RJ phone jack on the back and a DB9 Com port.
I cannot get the DB9 com port to work.
QA diagnostics says com 1 and 2 are there, but a loopback (with loop plug attached) does not work.
I tried removing the modem board, no luck. I did not see any jumpers in there.
Any ideas?
