Smartzone radio ids

Post by Kevin212 »

Have a Smartzone radio id question for the experts. I work with a police agency and we operate on a 800mhz smartzone system. Of course I have a dept radio with an assigned radio id for the system. Being that I love radios and I bought a better radio than issued and had it programmed on the system using my radio id. The question is will using the two radios on the system with the same id cause any harm??? The radios work fine, I was just curious about the radios having the same id. Some people say that radios cant have the same ids and wanted an expert opinion. Thanks guys.

This is an all-around BAD idea.

If you are an authorized programmer on the system, this is no doubt a violation of the rules.

If you are not an authorized programming entity, that's a bigger violation.

Duplicate ID's cause problems on Smartzone systems, particularly multi-site systems, but even when restricted to a single site, the Zone controller periodically pings radios for their current affilitaion.

Duplicate ID's cause response collisions. BAD.

Some admins have special software that looks for duplicates. You could find yourself with a deactivated radio, with your user status suspended, or with disciplinary action initiated or all of the above.

The safe thing to do is get permission from the System Administrator to replace your lower tier unit with your personally owned higher tier unit. Then have the radio programmed by someone authorized by the System Administrator - and never again speak of this duplicate issue.

Why does everyone have to act like someone activated a nuclear missile launch when a trunking issue is brought up. Honestly, why cant you just answer the questions nicely or not say anything.

All of these self appointed overseers of the trunking world really night to get a life

I think XMO's response is appropriate. People lives depend on these systems, you cannot be too careful about them. Not only that, but the o.p.'s radio could be disabled by the sys admin, causing him more trouble. Its not always just dump a saved codeplug back in anymore...

XMO's comments are dead-on. There are even more issues he didn't mention:
What happens when your radio is destroyed in a fight? Who pays for a replacement or repair?
What if you are injured or killed in the line of duty and poor communications is found to be a contributing factor? Watch the Feds deny benefits since you were using your own radio.
What happens if your new (and probably different from everyone else's) radio is detected, either via RF or via physical inspection? How do you plan to feed yourself/your family with no job?

Alex663 - your comments are inappropriate. xmo has many years and many thousands of posts on you, and knows of what he speaks. Please refrain from such comments so we can avoid locking this thread.
