XTL 5000 O5O3 Head

Post by motorola-radio »

I had a DSP Ver. R10.00 XTL 5000 , it read from CPS is show use Odyssey head. It use the O5 head at dash mount ,when power up , it show "Maintenance Mode Remote Device ". when use remote mount,it also show "Maintenance Mode Remote Device ". Use the O3 head it also show "Maintenance Mode Remote Device "... why ? I know that when the DSP Ver. is R08.00 or upper, that radio can use O5 and O3 head . why my Ver. is R10.00 can't use the O5O3 head? when I change it to W7 or W9 head , it is normal power up and display normal , but no TX audio from the MIC...why ?

Is this a remote mount radio or a dash mount? I've had this problem before and I believe that Doug posted a writeup about some of the radios showing this exact problem.

On the O5 heads there's two different back plates, you either need an older or new one. You can also try going through the process of re syncing the control head to the radio and see if that fixes the problem as well. The CPS is able to do that for you.

this may also be a firmware incompatibility with the head

in version 12 CPS there is a synchronize control head feature that will update the firmware in the head to match the firmware in the radio.

My XTL5000 is a VHF radio,Firmware : R10.00.00 , DSP : R10.00.00 , Tuning : R01.00.04 , Bootloader : R04.00.00 , PSDT : R04.00.00 , Nautilus : R04.00.00
FlashCode : 100001-000000-7, Model No. M20KSS9PW1AN ....CPS read it show XTL 5000 Odyssey .when I got it ,it is no control head, install an O5 head by myself ...when I install an O3 head , it show same with the O5 head...I use the same method to synchronize control head with my other normal O5 control head radio ,it is success, that normal radio's DSP only R06.00.01....why ???

I was found the reason, but can't to solve it. I sync the O5 head was used remote mount head ,the programming cable was plug into the O5 head's mic plug, so it can sync ,also can read and write the radio. But use the O3 head, the programming cable was plug into the GCAI plug. I don't know why the GCAI plug can not read and write the radio at mid power radio, I try to use the high power radio and same interface board, it can read and write the radio...why ?

sounds like you are using the USB cable

for whatever reason i think you are going need a serial cable to make this happen

or try it through the back port on the brick

From one of the XTL service manuals : Mid-power transceivers do not support USB at
the TIB GCAI connector

I tried to use the serial cable(made by myself) to connect the back port and J6 front port ,the CPS can read the codeplug from the radio, but can't sync the O3 head. The CPS let us to choose the "O3 Control Head " by use GCAI port to sync the O3 head at mid-power radio . I used the back port to sync the head, it can't do that, I tried to use the J6 port to sync the O5 head, the radio had responded ,but it said choose wrong connection...

I don't have the part number in front of me (at work, but I think its in one of the previous threads) but your best bet is to buy the "XTL1500 USB DATA CABLE". Its a usb to the connector on the rear of the radio (not GCAI or the DB connector).

It seems to work for everything, and work well.

Did you get it to sync through the rear port? I don't think that's possible... I think it has to be synced from the front port...

I have a similar but unrelated problem in an O5 head that will not work in remote mount, the head won't talk to the radio, but as a dash mount it works fine, so I understand your frustration.
