ASTRO Saber Updating

Post by Astrogoth »

My UHF 438-521 ASTRO Saber is now working perfectly. I have 240+ channels working in 6 zones. FRS/GMRS, County Fire, big P25 system, 18 Ham repeaters including several P25 repeaters and a P25 calling frequency, news media and misc. I have eight scan lists set to autoscan on the first channel of each zone. I even have my callsign engraved on the back in case I have a senior moment during a QSO and forget who I am. Thanks in large part to several folks on this board, my ASTRO rocks.

I see a number of ASTROs on eBay these days for decent prices. I'd like to get a couple more for local P25 Ham use. Maybe one in VHF as well. The only thing stopping me is they are all analog. I'd have to do the one thing I don't know how to do. Flash upgrade an ASTRO Saber to the latest firmware / DSP and add P25. My current ASTRO has all features but the kitchen sink enabled. That would be fine. No need to reinvent the wheel. I already have a smart RIB.

So I ask the group mind: How do you DIY guys do it? You can respond in private if you don't want a public exchange.
So that the Warez Police don't misunderstand, again, I am not asking for any Motorola software.

Thanks

As for the firmware upgrade to the latest and greatest, the correct way is to go through your local MSS and order the flashkit to upgrade the firmware (~$75 + whatever the shop charges in labor to do it).

As for the flashcode hacking, well, search around on the board here and you'll figure it out.

Whats the P25 system you have programmed in? Anything good to listen to on P25 in the LA area??
