If the work was actually performed at a shop, I would say it not on the up and up, as Motorola does not provide software to do that. The tools normally used to perform such upgrade is the inofficial lab flashgrade tool. And if thats the case Moto would have an issue with it if it were sent in to the depot. I had one such radio come in to our shop, we sent it to moto-mexico and got a call a few days later stating what it was and they gave us a quote to make it a legit 1250 or return unrepaired. The customer chose to RUR the unit. If it was upgraded that way, then it should be okay, and moto would know by serial number it was legit. That was my experience. If I were the shop, I would not be selling converted radios if I had done them myself. Motorola doesn't look kindly on such acts by its shops...

I concur. Any MSS or other Motorola-affiliated shop is taking great risks by performing under-the-counter upgrades like this. As far as FCC type acceptance, I see no reason why it wouldn't still be valid so long as it was realigned properly.

If the FCC ID is different between a 750 & 1250, then converting one radio into another would technically void it's type acceptance requardless if it still meet FCC specs.

i bought it from a board memeber. he stated that he had it done at a local Motorola shop. I'll never send it to depot to fix as its out of warranty anyway. I just dont want anything that is not Moto or FCC legit. So is it or not? If not Im likely sending it back

If it was done at a shop, it is not legit as far as motorola is concerned. Does that matter if you are never going to depot it? I would think not as long as its for personal use, not used at your job if you are Pd/Fd. I would never use a hacked radio in a public safety/ mission critical situation though. As far as the FCC is concerned, I guess technically it is no longer type accepted, but if it was done properly and all tuning values were restored after the upgrade I would check the tanapa numbers on the radio and see if they match the tanapa used in ht1250's. There are some ht750 (16ch I believe) that have the same tanapa as a 1250. In which case it is the same board used in both radios. If the tanapa of the board and the one the codeplug is expecting are not the same, odd operation may result. I have seen a 4ch ht750 converted to a 1250 and it works great except the clock never changes from 12:00. This was a case where the tanapa's did not match. The question I have is did the seller advertise that is was a converted radio? If so then I don't think the seller is at any fault. If He did not, till after you bought it, shame on him.

This is really pretty simple...

Does the radio have a FCC ID sticker on it? If you look up the FCC ID, does it cover HT750s only? If no sticker, or if the FCC certification doesn't cover HT1250s, then the radio is illegitimate. It is not officially type-accepted, should not be sent to the depot, and should not be used for Part 90/etc. communications. It would be just fine in amateur service, however I would recommend a complete check of the radio for proper alignment before using it.

I would hazard a guess that the FCC IDs are different, and thus the radio is no longer certified.

If you knew the radio was converted, and you didn't do your homework regarding the implications of such a conversion, then you don't have grounds to complain. If the seller represented the radio as being legitimate/type-accepted, that's a different matter.

This is your one warning: do not let this thread turn into a flamefest, or it will be locked down. If you believe you've received the shaft from a seller on the board, PM me or one of the other staff members with details if you can't work it out on your own with the seller.

oh no. not trying to start a flames war. Just looking for some advice and opinions. The radio is for personal useon a goverment department. He stated the ht750 had keypad and the same rf board and the only thing the was changed was the case and electronics and the software. the rf board stayed the same. he suggested i post here for opinions if i didnt trust him. its not the thougt of being caught i just want a 100% legit radio.

My $0.02: Just use your radio and enjoy it. These things are really not worth nitpicking over.

FWIW, most of the tanapas for the pro series "can" be covered by a single FCC ID number, but each radio has its own individual FCC ID. I've ordered UHF CDM1550LS+ radios in bulk pack, and they come in the box they came in from Penang, and will have a sticker indicating the enclosed "supertanapas" are covered under the following FCC ID numbers, and proceeds to list the FCC IDs for every UHF Pro Series mobile (CDM750, 1250 & 1550) of the same power setting.

*sigh*

To the OP: If you have an issue with the radio not being technically legit, regardless of whether the radio operates correctly and within spec, you need to take it up with the seller.
