MTS 2000 Service Mode
I am new to the M world, as I just received my MTS back from the shop finally. Now that it works, I feel the need to mess with it. Before I do that, however, I am having a few problems with the radio.
MTS2000, Model # H01KDH9PW1BN, Version R06.27, Flash code 001008-000000-0, Serial # 466IWW5***
Here is my problem: Occasionally, (and the radio is currently experiencing this) the frequencies programmed into certain channels are repeating themselves.
The radio has 5 zones programmed each with a different total number of freqs.
Example:
Normal:
Chan 1 = Freq 1
Chan 2 = Freq 2
Chan 3 = Freq 3
Chan 4 = Freq 4
and so on and so forth.
Problem:
Chan 1 = Freq 1
Chan 2 = Freq 2
Chan 3 = Freq 1
Chan 4 = Freq 2
Chan 5 = Freq 5
Chan 6 = Freq 6
Chan 7 = Freq 5
Chan 8 = Freq 6
an so on and so forth.
This happened once before, and after a short time, the radio functioned normally. This time however, the radio does not revert back to what its supposed to be.
The radio does this across all zone and channels. Fortunately, none of my critical channels are being affected by this, for the moment. Something else I have noticed: In Zone 1, there are 12 Channels programmed, with the last 4 showing "UNPROGRAMMED" on the display. However, currently, channel 14 has picked up the freq programmed into channel 12, where it was previously unprogrammed. While in service mode, I came across the "function test" for buttons, switches, etc. For positions 1-16 the channel selector reads (1)4/0, (2)4/1, (3)4/0, (4)4/1, (5)4/4, (6)4/5, (7)4/4, (8)4/5, (9)4/8, (10)4/9, (11)4/8, (12)4/9, (13)4/12, (14)4/13, (15)4/12, (16)4/13. While I am new to Moto stuff, I do know that "4/" is the switch. All other buttons (that have a programmed function) test normally. Ok, after beating around the bush, here are my questions. What is the possible cause of the radio screwing my freqs like this? (Shoddy programming, incompatible RSS (I am aware this is a European radio), etc.) Fixes I can do myself? I do not really care to return the unit to the shop.
And, on a slightly different note, is there a guide/primer/cheat sheet for the service mode? I have searched high and low for owner's manuals and service stuff, here and at radioreference.com, to no avail. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Sounds to me like the channel selector switch is faulty. In service mode you should be able to rotate the channel switch from 1-16 displaying 4/0-4/15 respectively. This is totally independent of codeplug programming, and controlled at the firmware level.
Replace your channel selector switch, and your problems are solved.

Been a long time since I had a Jedi apart, but I think the channel selector is on a flex - it may need to be reseated. Sounds like one address line isn't making good connection. I'd give that a shot, then outright replace it.

I agree. The rotary channel selector switch is actually a binary stepper switch, and your data implies that Pin 2 of the switch has become discontinuous.
The MCS represents channels as the binary equivalent of the nominal channel number, minus 1. That is, nominal slot 1 on the selector is ChNo 0, which is binary 0000; slot 2 is ChNo 1, which is binary 0001, and so forth.
Slot 3 would be ChNo 2, which would be binary 0010, but if pin 2 is defective, the radio will see 0000, which is Slot 1 again. Ditto for Slot 4. Now you get to slot 5, which is ChNo 4, or binary 0100, and since Pin 2 isn't active, the channel shows up properly.
(This didn't format as a table the way I intended, but you get the point.)

Thanks for the quick replies, guys. Now, this begs the question, how do you take a Jedi apart? I took a quick look last night before posting, but I don't remember seeing screws. I've built computers and other electronics, so I have no anxiety about taking it apart. However, I have been unable to locate service manuals (or any kind of manual, for that matter). Remove the battery, antenna and knobs.
The radio consists of the front and the frame. The top of the frame locks into a recess in the top inside of the front, and the bottom of the frame locks into a recess in the bottom inside of the front as the two are squeezed (squozen?) together.
Motorola makes a tool for separating, but most folks use a wide slotted screwdriver. Insert between the frame and the front, at the bottom. Carefully pry the bottom of the frame out of the bottom of the front, hinge it open a tad, and slide the frame down to separate the tops. Be careful not to nudge the flex connector. Unlatch the main flex where it lands on the board on the frame, and the two parts are now fully separated.
When reassembling, be careful of the flex; do not press any buttons (intentionally or inadvertently); watch to keep the gasket properly seated.
Foregoing all from memory on the fly; there's probably some other cautions I've left out.

Is this entire assembly what you are referring to, or just the individual channel selector? The flex cable that runs to the bottom of the radio is slightly damaged, but I believe that is causing my problem. As far as I can tell, there is one wire broken on the right of the flex.

Yep, you're looking at the right thing. If the flex is fractured, that's almost certainly your problem. Order a replacement (part number on the sticker) and swap it out, and you should be good to go. When you reassemble, pay close attention to how the flex lays, where the gaskets go, etc.

Thanks for all the help and quick responses. After the parts get here, I will more than likely be back to get help disassembling the switch assy. I looked and poked and prodded but it got the best of me. I guess I will also have to dig out my soldering iron, as there are 2 contacts soldered to the shield.

I'm having the EXACT same problem. Channels repeating, duplicated. Besides M is there anywhere I can send this off to get it fixed? I don't feel comfortable opening the radio up.
