Fooling an X9000 without a VRS

Post by hfd376 »

I have an X9000 low band that has the VRS cable with the control cable piggybacked in it. I do not have the VRS unit and upon powering up the unit I get a fail 01/90 and a power on/off cycle. I think this is coming from not having the VRS unit. Is there any way to "fool" the drawer into thinking the VRS is there?

What radios do you own?: X9000 thru APX

Unplulg the VRS cable? Unless you have something home brewed, the VRS, siren and the vrs/siren combo cable were all seperate from the actual control cable. It only connected to the system via the "T" plug.

You should still be able to power up the x9000 without the VRS, even if the x9000 does or does not have it enabled in the codeplug (you would received an error xx/xx code). I would suspect there is something else going on.

I have not seen a control cable that had another cable coming off of it to a VRS or a siren (or any other option).

A VRS error would be a 12/xx error.

The Fail 01/90 means the radio drawer isn't talking to the control head. The control head reports it as a failed radio drawer even if the problem is in the head itself or in the cable. You must fix the Fail 01/90 before you can use the radio at all.

If you fix the Fail 01/90 problem you will get a VRS error as long as a VRS is programmed into the radio drawer and no VRS is connected. The control head, radio drawer and VRS all have their own microprocessors that talk to each other when you power up the radio. Any option that is programmed into the code plug that doesn't respond at power up generates an error or fail code. You can ignore these missing option problems or just reprogram the radio drawer without the missing option.

Thanks so much for the replies. Since I was only going to see if it powered up, I did not hook up the red main power lead. The radio powers up fine.

If your meant you used a Siren/PA cable and never applied power to the unplugged VRS connector (the other end of the T-cable) that should be OK.

If you never applied power to the radio drawer connector then this is the cause of your Fail 01/90. These large main red and black power wires supply the radio drawer microprocessor 5 volt regulator. If the radio drawer doesn't have power to the microprocessor, its no wonder the control head can't talk to it. You must supply power to the large red lead.

I had to edit this post to correct some specifics about the VRS.
