PURC 5000 Digital Modulator

Post by redbeard »

What is the digital modulator tray used for in the PURC? I bought it whole for the original Motorola HSO contained within, but I'm wondering if the leftover PCB is worth keeping around. I would like to see my MSF5k do paging later on at some point, but if it's of no use then I will send it on it's way. It appears to be a TLE2632 if it makes a difference to anyone.

For those not in the know it is the exact same tray as what's in the MSF5k, but the deviation adjustment holes on the front actually are used for something and not empty. I bought it because it was the cheapest and most straightforward (read: no hacks) way to make my Jersey-MSF operational.
Look, it's not in my nature to be mysterious. But I can't talk about it and I can't talk about why.

On the PURC5000, paging data feeds the modulation circuitry in the HSO tray. The pots adjust the positive and negative frequency excursion, since the data is converted to a frequency shift rather than modulating with audio.

The 14.4 MHz reference oscillator is also on that circuit board, so you'd need it for your NJ repeater if you just swap trays. You just don't need the modulation stuff.

Of course, if you're just moving the 5 MHz oscillator to the NJ repeater tray, that didn't have one, you don't need the rest of that chassis.

Could you tell me how to feed the data to the digital modulator? What sort of format/connection is required?

Sorry I missed your response way back when you left it...
