XTL2500 burning up remote control head interfaces

Post by 4n6inv »

Has anyone run into this type of problem before that might offer a suggestion? I have a fire truck that this radio has been in for over 4 years. I figured it was just a bad control head, but swapped it with another unit and found the smoke had been let out of the actual remote control head interface. I tried the control head on another unit and it powered up fine. I tried the "back" or interface on the same unit and nadda. I left the control head in the fire truck, since the other one had only come out of a utility pickup, but this morning; the fire truck radio is DOA again. Just damn. I'd already ordered a replacement back for the control head, but am now wondering if I should just "flat rate" the whole mobile. Any ideas?

*EDITED TO SAY* When I said "let the smoke out", I meant it. There is some kind of microprocessor looking do-dad under a brass shield that was torched.

Thanks!

Pinched control cable somewhere maybe?

Other than that, catostropic failure 8)

Does the truck have 24 VDC electrics? If so where does the 12VDC come form?

Do you have horn and lights hooked up? If so what votltage are the relays?

Are the control head(s) are hooked up to a clean 12VDC soruce (not taped off one that runs noisy things like pump relays or the light bar)?

How is the control head and other accessories grounded and is this the same 'ground' as the radio?

The unit has 2 12VDC batteries in parallel. Master switch that is turned on and off when the truck goes into service. I've measured the volatage and it is ~13.8 VDC going into the radio. The CH and radio are both chassis grounded. No weird stuff going on. It's worked for 4 years.

There was a service bulliten for the XTL1500. It might be the same issue.

FSB NUMBER: FSB10001
APC CODE: 726, 775
DATE: Jul-06
EXPIRES: 12/31/2006
BULLETIN TYPE: Warranty Service
SUBJECT:
XTL1500 – Ignition Sense Stops Working - For Heavy Duty or Large Vehicle Installations
MODELS / SYSTEMS AFFECTED:
All XTL1500 mobiles, not band specific shipped before August 2006. Radios shipped starting in August 2006 will have this kit included with the ignition sense kit.

SYMPTOM:
XTL1500 Mobile radios with ignition switch power control installed in vehicles using large solenoid switches may be damaged due to large reverse transient voltage spikes produced by these solenoids. When this occurs the XTL1500 ignition sense fails to function properly.
CAUSE:
Design Limitations
RESOLUTION:
Install the ignition sense diode kit (HLN6325B) as seen in the figure below. To order the HLN6325B, contact Customer Care Services at 800-422-4210 and reference this FSB number.
