Someone to test my W3 mic?

Post by mancow »

Would someone be willing to test my W3 hhch? I am getting all pixels blacked out on the screen when I turn the radio on but I can barely see a faint FAIL 01/90 if I hold it at the right angle. I know that the radio itself probably has issues that are causing the fail code but I am trying to first determine if the hhch is ok or not. When power is removed the display fades back out to blank with a few vertical lines that linger longer than others on fade out.

Also, is there a contrast adjustment somewhere inside it?

So, if one of you well known and trusted members would be willing to test this for me I would paypal you a few bucks for your time.

When do you need this done?

CoM
If the lights are out when you leave the station and then come on the second you key up, you know you have enough power.

The display board is very similar (if not almost identical) to that in an Astro Saber.

There should be a white pot that adjusts the contrast on the display board.

I did not see an adjustment pot in there anywhere. The next plan would be to compare the design to the saber and attempt to intercept that same contrast line to see if it can be manipulated to provide an adjustment.

They are the same boards, the contrast adjustment pot is on the display side of the PCB. Everyone I have seen does have the pot, but that is not to say that all do.

Really? Because every one I've looked at didn't have it, including PLN7737 XTVA HHCHs.

To be fair, they were late E-series revision heads, though.

From http://batboard.batlabs.com/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=75426
Code3 wrote:To adjust the display contrast:

Put the radio into service mode by pressing the bottom side button 5 times after power up.
Press the top side button until you get to "CONTRAST"
Press the Orange Emerg (Middle Top) Button to enter the contrast adjustment
Adjust the contrast using the LEFT and RIGHT Menu arrow keys.
Once you have acheived the appropriate contrast, power cycle the radio.

Enjoy!

I put a vocon from a W4 in it and tried a different W3 control head. It powers up and displays information on the new control head. I can change the display on the new head using the above method as well. So, it appears the previously mentioned first W3 head is bad and I likely have a bad W3 vocon board as well. How nice.

So, would anyone be able to help a guy out with a Vhf W3 hi power S rec?
