New APX 7500 Mobile

Post by rangerfourever »

Anyone using the new 700/800 APX 7500 mobile in field application. Our county is moving to a new MOTO trunk system that they claim will be TDMA with possible Phase II upgrade in near future. We are going to OpenSky(dont ask!) but need to communicate with our county agencies.

Sounds like you would be better off with Harris M7200 that will be backwards compatible with Phase I P25. You could do it with one radio then, and still talk on your Open@$@$% System. You dont have to have TDMA to be capable with P25 systems. Phase II systems talkgroups will dynamically fall back to FDMA/Astro when a non TDMA radio enters the call, providing the system admin sets this up. If you must have compatibility with 2 slot TDMA-X (Moto's interim solution) you'll need an APX.

The APX7500 isnt shipping just yet, btw.

I was told by one of the systems guys at Motorola that "Dynamic Dual Mode" that you mention above will not be based upon the ID of the radio. Instead they are going to rely on one of the Manufacturer's bits in the actual datastream that says this radio is only capable of FDMA, whereas this radio will be capable of TDMA/FDMA.

This means that unless the other manufactures configure this bit in their protocol there will be no way to identify a radio as being only FDMA unless it's a actual Motorola radio (and probably also has a certain firmware revision installed).

Ok, lets assume that will be the case. (I've heard what you describe, and several other accounts of exactly how that will go, it may very well be a /\/\ proprietary feature, thats not "part" of phase II). Let's hope not.

All that would need to be done at that point is to establish a set group of I/O talkgroups that are Phase I.
