Orlando HAMCATION 2010 whos in? and a apco25 bonus

Post by wazzzzzzzzup »

i found out i will be able to attend the Orlando Florida Hamcation this year :)

this year its being held February 12, 13, 14 2010 the address is
Central Florida Fairgrounds
4603 West Colonial Drive Orlando, Florida 32808 http://www.Hamcation.org
contact info Mort, WA2ARS & Roberta Cohen, [email protected], (407) 814-0434

the apco25 bonus is.......
i was able to secure a Astro Spectra P25 mobile with an attached UHF VRS (vehicle repeater) for the event.
it will be set up on Ham. this will provide any ham with a UHF analog radio to listen to and communicate with anyone using
P25 VHF, as im sure theres quite a few people who are interested in learning more about P25, this will give people an opportunity to hear how it sounds, and interact. the UHF VRS is analog only, and the mobile does all the analog to digital to analog converting. all you need to do is show up with the following radio configuration

156.565 VHF APCO25 with NAC 293 (50 watts)
446.000 UHF ANALOG with PL of 103.5 for access, and the VRS will put out a pl of 100.0 (cant use the same PL) (2 watts)

yes i know 446.000 is national calling, but its a dead frequency and i figure this would give it some life at the hamfest.
it might also introduce P25 to any hams who MIGHT be using that freq for communication..... but i rarely hear anyone on it at Hamfests.

as an alternate, if enough people reply to this post displeased with the usage of ham for this, then it could be set up on biz band under the batlabs freqs at reduced power.

151.880 VHF APCO25 with NAC 293 (low power) 2 watts or less
462.6625 UHF ANALOG with PL of 103.5 for access, and the VRS will put out a pl of 100.0 (low power 300mw)

also the VRS is PL only. and the VRS will give the UHF user a courtesy tone of sorts letting them know that their message was relayed to vhf properly, if thier signal was weak or not enough for consistent usage it will put out a low tone.
these tones will not pass to VHF.

if this works well, i may be able to borrow it again for Dayton 2010....

so, are you IN for attending?
and post if you plan on checking out the setup using either P25 Vhf or analog UHF

Very nice. I'll be attending and trying at the UHF analog input. I'm assuming the 155.565 VHF side is a typo (146..565)?

I'll be there with my crew. We camp in the tailgate area in motorhomes. Lots of fun, & plenty of cheese burgers. 446 sounds good to me. GARY N4KVE

I'll be there and can have either V or U, but I have to ask if the 156 (Part 90 commercial) to 446.0 (Part 97 amateur) is a typo? Legally you can't cross-band the two unless I'm mis-reading the post.

yest it was VERY COLD in the morning sat. i think this was the best hamcation in years, this year was prob as good as the fest used to be in the late 90s b4 ebay came on scene. from about 2002 til maybe last year, it seems ebay had taken alot of the good variety out of the fests with many people complaining about ebay.

the Xband repeater worked, but the UHF side has a very tight squelch so the range was limited in buildings and on the north side of the tailgate. hopefully by Dayton, if i can borrow it again the VRS750 squelch issue will be resolved, preferably with the threshold of a NORMAL HT750. may require putting a regular HT750 in the VRS750. the shop has a used ht750 coming in that they will try to work with.

I was really disappointed that I couldn't make it. Sounds like things are going alright...
Good Luck!
