Do APX7000 and APX7500 allow simultaneous recieve???

Post by wd9cms »

Do the APX7000 and the APX7500 dual band radios allow you to simultaneously receive on both bands at the same time??? If so can you transmit on one band and continue to receive traffic on the other band??? It is unclear if this is the case in any of the literature that I have seen on these radios.

Thanks,
Bill

I don't know about the mobile but the 7000 doesn't do a "full duplex" split between bands. Not setup at all like a dual band ham unit with V+V, V+U, U+U abilities. You can mix bands in the Zone channel assignment and if I see it right you COULD do a split between UHF/VHF and 800 (TX on 1 band, RX on the other..) if you set it up right in the Conventional Personality. Just tried it in the CPS, seems to take it but didn't try programming the radio though....

Dave,

Thanks for the info. So why the two sides??? Does audio from one band only come out one side of the radio or does the audio come out of both sides? Do you transmit on one side for one band and the other for the second band or do you transmit on either side depending on the channel your on? Thanks for the help on this just trying to make a decision on if its worth it. It looks like the APX would make a good second radio to have for interoperability but for tactical operations a xts5000 still looks like the correct choice since you might miss a critical transmission.

Speaker selection is a part of the Profile Menu in the radio. Mics on both sides, speaker can be selected to front, display side (reduced volume for survelliance) or both. There are all sorts of settings to make a profile such as analog and digital mic gain and AGC selection, treble boost or cut on receive, lights on or off, and so forth. Basically, it is like a single band radio in the way it operates.

Dave,

Thanks for the information...I think its a good first try and has many applications. I still do not get what all the greatness is about the two sides if it can only operate one band at a time (I can see the need for two microphones to handle noise reduction). For tactical operations it looks like programing and training will be critical on these radios.

Apropos of nothing except the APX itself, on last week's (Feb. 13) "Cops" the Las Vegas Metro PD were seen in several shots to be using what appeared to be the APX7000.

If they were its probably a very limited test. Vegas is in the process of moving to an 800 Opencrap system from VHF.

I would imagine since both radios only have one channel/personality at a time transmit/receive. I would guess that dual receive is not an option. Until someone provides a way to program two personalities at the same time to the radio, dual receive will not be an option, unlike some amateur radio gear.
