xtl2500 control head question

Post by mikey107sec »

Will a XTL2500 control head work on a XTL5000? Looking at photos the back of them look the same but I wonder if the plugs are the same as wiring and that sort of thing. My job had recently purchased a storage unit and just the radio section of an XTL5000 was in a box. No control head or wiring. I would like to test it but don't have a XTL5000 head. I can pull one off of a XTL2500 at this time if it would work with this unit. I don't want to take a chance and blow out something if it is not compatable. Thanks for any info on this.

I've seen the heads on 5ks, but off hand I don't recall what was involved...mostly done for the "all black" look in the consoles more than anything else.

The control head will not allow the radio to function if it does not match the radio type. They have different firmware.

You can power up an XTL5000 without a control head and read the codeplug from the front programming port on the drawer unit.

There should be no reason why you could not also check radio funtioning with the tuner program from the same port, although I have never tried that.

Just putting power to the rear power connector on the XTL should allow it to go 'hot' so you can read it. Everything is a USB serial bus.

PJ funny you should mention the all black look...That was another thing that came up while discussing this at work. As of right now it is still sitting in a box until we figure out what to do with it. Do you remember what had to be done if anything to make that head work with the 5K?

Honestly no. Pretty sure there was a thread on here that explained it..unless it was simple enough to swap plastic. I dont own a 2500 to play with..

Can't speak for the O series cus it's late but I just worked on 3 W-7s and they required the control head in order to turn on. Radio would briefly boot up then kill itself. IF you can hit the read button fast enough, you might be able to catch it, but the write will be next to impossible

Any W series control group used with an XTL will require the control head to be present. Our favorite ones here are the Dual DEA radios with the hidden W9 control head.

The newer ones with the O3 seem to be happy, most of the time.

Do you have info on parts, sp or otherwise for those? Those seem to be the elusive dual radio setups...unless its the HRR setup

Which part numbers do you need, the ones for the W9 XTL or the HHCH XTL? I may have a document on both somewhere here.

Anything to do with the dual radio W9's or O3's XTL (vs ASTRO Spectra)
